wood floor transitions

We are replacing all of our floors with click-lock engineered wood planks. What is the best way to transition from each room to the hall? I know they make T-molding for this, but are there other (more creative?) ideas we should consider?

What is in the hall?

I would avoid T-molding. I'd want my floors to be flat and smoothly transition without molding.

Can we assume this is a floating floor installation? If so, then the "even t-molding" is the way to go. It is fast, simple, effective. And required with a floating floor.

You are welcome to contact the manufacturer to see what else they have on offer, but you will not be surprised to find out that the even t-molding is the only t-molding available to go through doorways when the two floors are identical in height.

Only a fastened floor (glue, nail, staple, cleat, mortar) floor can be "transition free".

OK, so basically there is no magic bullet that I'm just unaware of. So fabrication: The piece that abutts the tile should be level with the tile and the thickness of the tile and thinset. The part that will cover the wood floor will receive the rabbett. If the tile and thinset is roughly 1/2" and the wood is slightly lower (maybe an 1/8th), about how overall thick should I make the piece? 3/4"? Also, would you fasten it with a bead of adhesive then nail and putty? Thanks

I don't think I have any pics of it, but Mom & Dad had the same thing in their old house when Dad installed the tile in the kitchen. He took a very simple hardwood trim piece that had a bevel to it & used it for the transition with the higher end on the tile side & the lower end of the bevel on the hardwood side. He then stained it to match. You should be able to get these at your local HD/Lowes or hardwood store. Good luck!

Okay, I think I see what you are getting at. I should be able to lay flooring into the doorway with ease and then maybe screw down a straightedge to the door frame (or pocket screw it in place) and route a perfect line. Then it would be alot of small adjustments, but I'd rather do that on one filler strip than every floor board. I should have said, the boards meet this doorway edge on, that is, the boards are the long part of the T and the doorway is the top of the T. Thanks. Anthony

the ideal way would have been to left a gap at the wood and then fill with a caulk. that way it wont impede the wood from expanding. Now ive seen lots of floors that didnt do this and they do fine for many years without issue. I think you will be ok, but it is fixable if it ever does become an issue.
