Houzz Tour: Empty Nesters Transition to a Luxe High Rise
Tour a Captivating San Francisco Home Designed for Entertaining and Art

December 27, 2010
Designed by Zack de Vito Architects for a couple of empty nesters in Russian Hill, this luxury high-rise boasts generous skyline views of downtown and the San Francisco Bay Bridge. What a delightful transition from a traditional family home to one that is conducive to entertaining and displaying a priceless art collection.
The floor plan allows the main areas to be exposed to the expansive views and loads of sunlight, while the inner rooms are divided by rich, custom cabinetry and neutral painted walls. The apartment's lighting plan adds yet another dimension of the space and gives it a museum-like quality. See for yourself this captivating space and decide if your next adventure will include high-rise living.

The couple's collection of graphic paintings are evenly disbursed throughout the space and marries perfectly with the custom cabinetry and other artifacts.
The pendant lights, bar stools, and gray-hued granite countertops give this contemporary kitchen a dash of industrial flavor.
The kitchen features a double dose of seamless upper cabinetry. Cabinets closest to the ceiling house small kitchen appliances, while the darker-faced cabinets house everyday dinnerware and drinking glasses. Providing seemingly endless storage, the low-profile cabinet doors makes them virtually disappear.
Contemporary dark-stained built-ins provide an area for displaying collectibles and clothing storage without interfering with skyline views.
A multi-faced wall of recessed wood cabinetry and oversized art acts as a divider between the library and living room.
Space planning tip:
Use area rugs to delineate spaces in an open-concept plan. Notice how the rugs assist the transition between the living room, dining room and kitchen.

The bedroom's chrome four-post bed complements the space's clean, zen aesthetic. The wool rug adds a layer of comfort and texture.
Design tip: Use recessed lighting to direct attention to special features in the room. Notice how lights accent the sculptures, artwork and figurines within the library shelving.
Pristine and bright, this bath features a wide, raised soaking tub and a luxurious marble shower. The introduction of warm wood give it a bit of a rustic edge.
