Tile to wood floor transition at bathrm door

The guest bath that I'm plodding along with is inside a bedroom. That bedrooms hardwood floors run to this door. Unfortunately, those planks run perpendicular to the tile. I should also note that I moved the door location about a foot over. As a result, I've got wild cut floor boards that terminate at my new doorway. Cutting them doesn't seem to be an option as I can't get a saw on them (door jamb is in way) and a recip saw won't cut them straight enough. The tile is about an 1/8" to a 1/4" higher than the wood.

My options seem to be a marble saddle or a wood one. I was thinking something with a rabbet underneath and a hollywood bevel. I'm not sure that can be done with marble. I was thinking the rabbet would help hide the wild ends.

I'm open to all suggestions, even ones that involve cutting the wood floor...but it's got to be a straight cut.

I think I'd be more inclined toward a wood threshold, only because it'd be easier to work with with reference to fabrication. Also, if it's a uniform height difference across the door, you might also think about fabricating a reducer piece to nail into the hardwood where the tile butts up to it.

OK, so basically there is no magic bullet that I'm just unaware of.

So fabrication: The piece that abutts the tile should be level with the tile and the thickness of the tile and thinset. The part that will cover the wood floor will receive the rabbett. If the tile and thinset is roughly 1/2" and the wood is slightly lower (maybe an 1/8th), about how overall thick should I make the piece? 3/4"?

Also, would you fasten it with a bead of adhesive then nail and putty?

Okay, I think I see what you are getting at. I should be able to lay flooring into the doorway with ease and then maybe screw down a straightedge to the door frame (or pocket screw it in place) and route a perfect line. Then it would be alot of small adjustments, but I'd rather do that on one filler strip than every floor board. I should have said, the boards meet this doorway edge on, that is, the boards are the long part of the T and the doorway is the top of the T. Thanks. Anthony

roygbiv, this was exactly what I planned on doing. I have had the HARDEST time choosing between cream painted cabinets or the cherry... but for now, I am saying Cherry (but I so love cream too!!) and I will do the island in cream. jejvtr, thanks for all the links.. I got "stuck" on the rate my space, and spent a couple hours on it!! (of course, 2nd guessing myself again!) I did have hardwood in the kitchen in our last house, and I did really love it, however, I only lived there 7 months - barely enough time to settle in. The flooring is a Spanish mahogany, so it is a different wood species, yet I am not sure if it has enough of a contrast, or if it doesn't really matter much if I am going with a lighter (either in the gold or beige) granite and doing the island in a cream glaze.

Thanks for all your responses. 1. I will replace the door casing once I am done dealing with the transition issue. 2. The problem with the transition piece and its resolution depends a lot on whether I can safely remove the piece - I installed it (and the tiles about 8 months ago) so it certainly is firmly seated. So, is it possible to remove it, without doing much damage to the surrounding tiles? 3. If i can remove it, then I want to proceed as follows (please see figure below for directions): . (i) Once I remove the transition piece, I will extend the tile from the bathroom (I still have extras left) by 2" into the doorway (see "A" above). (ii). Note, the laminate planks were not finished evenly either .. "C" is a bit wider (about 1/2", while "D" is a bit tighter, about 1/8". So, I will first straighten the laminate ends by trimming it evenly at the "C" level. (iii) Extend the laminate tiles to cover "B", using a 2.5" horizontal plank. (iv) Alternatively, I will just replace the marble transition strip with a slightly wider one (about 4.5"). (4) But If I am unable to / or it is not advisable to remove the transition strip safely, then, I will even out the gab between the transition, and the laminate tile, and use the caulk as suggested to cover any residual gaps. thanks again and please, let me know your thoughts on my plans thanks - Oyiwaa

I think it’s permanent. When we measured with laser it was completely straight line but after laying tiles it starts flash with floors but goes about 1/4 inch gap to wards the end. I think by the time we get to the end it will be more than 1/4 inch. I was thinking to take off more about 4 inches of wood and lay a piece of sand wood opposite direction to make a transition point but that will probably only work if time end up flash with floor height that I will see only after wood is sanded.

You make it as thick as you need to, to make it come flush, or even just a little proud of the tile, from what you'll be nailing it to. Then you can either rabbit it, or nail it flush to the end of the boards. I think I'd rather nail it flush, being that "thin rabbits" tend to break off over time. Also, I agree with using a bead of construction adhesive (Liquid Nailz, PL 400-- something along those lines) underneat, as well as nailing it and then puttying the nail holes.
