Pls help with curtains on D.o.U.S. (Doors of Unusual Size)
I have read the many posts asking and receiving help for how high to hang curtains in various situations. Unfortunately, I can't wrap my head about how to apply that advice to this situation. My breakfast nook has tall French doors, over which I want to hang grommet-hung curtains. (Please forgive the mess, we're installing cabinets in the adjoining garage and laundry so things are piled up in the kitchen.)
Advice seems to generally say to hang close to the ceiling but that seems too high here, I think because of the nearby soffit. But what do I know? That's why I'm asking you-all!

(Yes, there are trees. No, they're not supposed to be structural but yes, they are to some degree. And yes, the one in the island does actually go all the way through the island.)

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI love the trees! I'd love to see those reflected a bit in your decor, for example with a more organic ceiling fan.
How about the curtain rod at or just below the bottom of the soffit (depending on how wide you need to go with the stack for the drapes) with a wide, horizontal piece of art in the blank space above? (Mockup below.) Caveat - not a designer, just throwing out an idea.
ETA: the curtain rod in my mockup is just for the mockup, not a suggestion. I think you'd want something that better complements the trim around the door. West Elm has something that might (?) work. Or a thin metal rod that complements your cabinet pulls.

Comments (20)The light in the room is really off. The sofas are a cream color and the carpet is actually a light beige, very neutral. Les917 - I like the idea of taking the brick to the ceiling, would definitely make it a focal point. I did a mockup below. Not very good though but gives the idea. Thank you for the suggestion. Suero - I'm not sure I understand your suggestion. Did you mean framing and sheet rocking it in like on top of the triangle sections so the entire FP is covered except the bottom portion with the screens? If so, that is inventive. Umm, maybe finding some way to put recessed shelving on the side. But wouldn't there need to be access of some type if service needed? I'll have to run it by Mom. I'm also going to try it as a mockup too. Teacats and Les, good idea about the torchiere. They do put out a lot of light though, but it is all on the ceiling. :-) Just what she needs, to highlight all that popcorn. LOL Bodica - great reminder about making sure it's a paint that can take the heat. Angeldog - The iron screen would definitely update the look. I've thought about crown molding, but I think the popcorn should come down first. I'm going to visit Mom this weekend and I am going to take ALL your suggestions. I think she will be so excited. I don't have Photoshop, but I did a quick mockup of taking the brick to the ceiling and I really like it. The original looked a little squished and your final design is nice and balanced - how big is the entire thing? Did you go with the 42in vent? Very nice! Remodelfla, thanks for the feedback, I know what you mean about the corbels  I go back and forth on that a lot. Janeincolorado, I hope this is helpful. For some reason, I have had a hard time finding much in the way of hood design discussions, at least about what I want specifically. Especially, what components are used to create the entire hood (this is confusing to me  like a big expensive puzzle). Anyway, I will try to find a link to the beefy one. It was a really great blog written by a guy trying to do his kitchen for less than $10k and he built the hood and other cabs himself. My problem with that hood is that he left it open and plain above and mounted a TV there (looks nice for his, but not for me). But that mantle he built is just beautiful. Rosie, thank you for the A&C perspective- you really seem to know what you are talking about and I love how you point out the masculinity needed for the style. It is always such a help to me to have the words to describe. The house is new construction (weÂve just set the loan closing date for this Friday  Eek!), so we donÂt yet have a space to mock it up. That would definitely help and IÂll be sure to do it before making any final orders. The 54in allows for a 4in window casing (and, yes, that is one thing I almost forgot to consider, luckily it dawned on me one day when I was looking into trim design  phew!). And thanks for the suggestions, IÂm trying to imagine what you describe  do you have any pictures? Cotehele, I feel your pain. I am really agonizing over this too. Most of what I see here and everywhere, though beautiful, just doesnÂt feel right to/for me. And it is such a pricey piece! Comments (16)I agree with measuring well, and I also agree that a 3-seater sofa and two chairs would be your best option. When you move, you would be able to most likely use both in a new place, or you would perhaps be able to either use the sofa or the chairs. And it gives you the most flexibility with options for furniture placement. Also, since you would like to use the space for tv watching and entertaining with family and friends, the sofa and 2 chairs would be the best fit, I think. I would keep it simple. I would not paint. I would also switch what you are planning - and I would instead use the space in front of fireplace for the dining area. If you’d like, you could bring in some rugs for more definition; and you could do a swag plug-in chandelier in dining area. I don’t know your style, so these are just some general ideas/views. But if you like any of the items i’ve used, I do have links for them :) Another chandelier: Below, a view with swag plug-in chandelier in dining area. They come in a variety of styles, this is just one: . Below, with rug to define living room:. And I would put the tv to the left of the fireplace - by that wall/window - on a floating/mobile tv stand/cart/console with wheels. That way, the tv can be seen from dining area, but can also be swung around to view from the living room area. It gives you the most flexibility for tv placement in this arrangement; and I see that there is an outlet right there, below that window. I would place the sofa on the long, window-free wall that faces the dining area and windows. 4 years agoWell, after working to finish the laundry and garage cabinets and then being away May through July, the curtains are finally up and I thought I'd post a follow-up. Thanks to all for the advice, because I think having the rod hang at the bottom of the soffit looks great!
The aqua curtains go very well with my "all aqua, all the time" kitchen and the polished nickel rod is similar to the handles on the DW, range, and fridge. I put the rod wide enough to be able to show the wood trim around the doors.
Also, while looking for curtain rods, I found the most adorable little bird finials also in aqua! Yes, I'm a sucker for cuteness-in-aqua.
