Stairs and banister matching floor?

Hello, I just tiled my floor with dark wood looking tiles, and will be carpeting my stairs and upstairs with lighter carpet. What should i do with the banister? Replacing isn't an option, was wondering if I should stain it dark vs painting it white and black? The entire house is painted pale oak with white trim

I would paint it black, the only way to stain a finished wood is to clean, buff, and use a polyshade to alter the stain. Which is hard to keep consistent.

Lisa Chia , talk with a contractor about pricing for refinishing the banister. It may be a LOT of hand work. I think it could look nice though.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary for you handrails to match your floor. Nice wood floors are sort of like bluejeans, in that they usually work well with other things. My handrails are a beautiful decorative blond wood, and they have never matched my floor. However, if your handrails/stairs are a major focal point of your room, you may feel that they should match to unify the space. In any case, it's your house and you should do whatever you think you'd like best!

The entire second floor is the same color as the stairs, so I would like to leave the stairs alone. Eventually, I would like to put a runner on the stairs to minimize the contrast, but need a banister color that would go well with both floor colors.

Definitely match stairs to your main floor. When I'm on my main floor, my basement stairs are quite visible. It would drive me crazy if they didn't match the surroundings (FWIW, once you get downstairs there's a laminate floor that barely matches, and I don't really care because the basement is a casual space).

It looks like it matches the stairs; if so, leave it.

We will be replacing the carpet. And the wood of the banister no longer matches the wood

Stain banister to match your floor tiles. Consider painting the spindles white to match your trim or I'd leave as is as I think they are classic and pretty.

If I was given the choice I would not carpet the stairs. I would keep the wood as is ( if it is in good shape) or stain it to match your floors. If any money is saved I would replace the metal rails with classic wood spindles.
