Stairs lighter than first floor: What banister color to get?

The first floor was redone in a Carolina Timber Saddle, and we kept the stairs and all of upstairs in the original hardwood. The banister needs to be updated, and I need help deciding what color the banister should be. I would like to have white wooden spindles. The wall color will be Balboa Mist.

Is there anyway you can have the stairs refinished to match the floor downstairs?

The entire second floor is the same color as the stairs, so I would like to leave the stairs alone. Eventually, I would like to put a runner on the stairs to minimize the contrast, but need a banister color that would go well with both floor colors.

Here is an example of combo paint & dark stain on stairs with blonde main floor wood stain. I will also post an example of painted stairs with a carpet strip. Of the two, I think the stairs painted to match walls, with a carpet strip, looks better. But that's just personal preference.

I like Sherwin Williams Wood Classic varnish. Any oil based finish adds the amber tint. I generally use Minwax, HD or Lowe's. You will see an immediate change. Hand sand with 150 grit paper. There may be problems after applying the new poly---because of the number of coats on the stairs now---bubbling, checking, that sort of thing. I have used oil based over water based successfully in the past---but not over 10 coats. If you have to remove the water based, stripping will be much faster than sanding---poly clogs sandpaper quickly.

The grout color is lighter than we expected - what now?

I think grout can be stained if it's not sealed yet (ask your tiler). in that case, I imagine it can be put on in wide strokes and wiped off the tile. or if it is sealed, there are products like "grout renew". I wouldn't recommend it for a shower or any area that needs to be cleaned often. it's basically paint and will eventually chip off with regular cleanings. for a brand new shower, I would not want to add that level of maintenance.

I would do the banister a very dark brown and then do the runner in the same tone, that will pull it all together.

I would definitely dark too, you have white now and it really doesn’t work well.

The only way you can marry the floor with the stairs is to use a runner. Find one in a tone of the floor.
