Stair treads are lighter/whiter than wood floor

I have Bruce Natural Reflections in Natural Oak hardwood floors. The specs say its a mix of red and white oak with a clear coat. It matches my sanded on site red oak with a clear oil poly.

I finished the oak treads with a clear water based poly. It looked like it was matching fine, but clearly after finishing them, the stair treads are lighter and not as yellowish red, as the floors. It almost looks like they are a clearer, better grade than the floors. Is there anyway to help fix this without completely sanding off the 8 coats of poly I put on. I might just have to live with it if I had to sand them down to bare wood...its an open staircase in an open entryway.

The water based poly is the reason they are lighter. Oil based poly ambers the wood slightly. Had they been finished with the same type poly they would have matched. Sanding probably wouldn't help now, since the new coating wouldn't be able to penetrate the treads.

What if I sanded it all the way to the bare wood?

Tara, I am not a flooring person either but was given the same info by my flooring guy. I just put down a QS oak floor which included three stairs. I think the original treads were pine. My floor guy said not to mess with it that he would stain it to match floor. Well I'm not too crazy about how it turned out. My trim Carpenter said he could cover it with oak but the floor guy said it should have been done before floor was laid. I wish now I would have just replaced them.

I would recommend renting a floor edging sander and sand off the high grain, unless they are worn too thin. The wood filler sounds like a lottt of work and will require sanding anyway. Here is a link that might be useful: Floor edging sander

What is the reason for carpeted stairs to the basement? Is that the entry area? Our old house had carpeted stairs and we ended up pulling it out after DH slipped and fell down the last 3 steps, knocking a large hole in the wall at the bottom. It could have been the carpet type, which was installed over finished hard wood steps, but all I know is that after we took it out, no more problems with slipping (or kids using the stairs to 'surf' with cardboard. Anyway, back to the topic, I'd suggest a unified look if at all possible.

Thank you! I do have photos, but the floors are covered with ram board to protect them and I have not done the railings yet, so the photos dont really show anything. In hindsight I should have taken more photos prior to starting the work. The stair nosings on the landings have started to sag & slope so initially I only wanted to jack them up a little & install shims, but quickly realized that there were more issues going on here, unrelated to my stain color question. One was that when they set the treads, they were about 1/2” away from the wall, leaving these strange gaps between the end of the tread and the moulding it butted to at the wall. It was very difficult to clean and unattractive. Im also adding a much deeper & thicker moulding up the wall to allow the treads to appear closed ended to the moulding.

Before doing all that sanding, try adding two coats of oil based poly.

In the future, more than three or four coats of either poly becomes redundant. There is no more protection added, and, since poly is prone to chipping and is very difficult to repair---more coats make deeper chips.

I use a name brand varnish for coating wood stairs. Just as much protection and better repair ability.

Can I just add the oil based over the water? I am guessing I should lightly sand first? Should I notice a difference in the color right away or do I need time to pass for it to yellow a bit?

I'll try to get a pic of it to post so you can see the color difference.

For the future what brand varnish do you use?

OK, this isn't a pic of my floor but it looks exactly like my treads and the rest of my wood floor. I will get some oil based poly and try it on one and see if it helps -- if I could get it to amber even some. Any particular brand you prefer?

I like Sherwin Williams Wood Classic varnish.

Any oil based finish adds the amber tint. I generally use Minwax, HD or Lowe's. You will see an immediate change.

Hand sand with 150 grit paper. There may be problems after applying the new poly---because of the number of coats on the stairs now---bubbling, checking, that sort of thing. I have used oil based over water based successfully in the past---but not over 10 coats.

If you have to remove the water based, stripping will be much faster than sanding---poly clogs sandpaper quickly.

Its definitly mellowed a bit...the blueish dead tone is gone. Its still much lighter, but at least its warm looking. Thank you so much for the tip of using oil over the water based poly. I used Minwax and it seems to have bonded fine.

Now if it will last.

The bluish 'dead' color is from water based poly. That variety adds no color.
