I wrote my annual charity pie sale story this week. Thirty champion pies ... apple, cherry, peach, pumpkin and open class ... win, place, and show ... across both adult and youth baking classes to benefit our local FFA and 4H youth this summer at the fair. Raised $27,300 at auction. Top pie (peach) sold for $2,400. How much is that per bite? Thirty pies, 30 minutes of auction time. Fun event. Record raised was 32 grand a couple of years ago. Used to be that you had to use a lard crust. No longer a requirement, but seems like all the top-judged pies still do.
