Yep it is a jar opener. We used it a lot back in the day.

I still have one of those in my kitchen drawer and still use it. It belonged to my DH's grandmother.

I have one and use it quite often, it's the best jar opener I've ever had! Beats the plastic/rubber 'grippy' things all to heck! And as I get older and my grip gets weaker, it's even more a necessity in my kitchen.

I also have a Black & Decker electric "Lids Off", remember those? It was a gift back when they were advertised so much. I still use it occasionally, but the little hand held thingy is usually quicker and easier to get to.

A few years ago, someone told of the jar key. It may have been raven. They're available from Amazon and elsewhere and are amazing. They're cheap and very effective. When using one of these, opening jars is simple and requires no effort at all.

How it works - food in jars is packaged at high temperature and that develops a strong vacuum in the jar when it cools, to hold the lid on tightly. You hear the sound of air when first opening a jar lid.

Just a very slight upward pressure on the handle of this gizmo pulls on the edge of the lid just enough to break the vacuum. The lid will then unscrew as if the jar had been previously opened.

I have a couple of them in the kitchen drawer. I have some of the rubber round things from a state farm company.

I still whack my jars on the floor. Titled so as to hit the smallest portion ever. Works every time I can't just unscrew the lid.

Turn jar upside down, smack the bottom with palm of hand for easy opening.

No that doesn't work once you get old and have severe arthritis! It takes some type of mechanical assistance unfortunately. Lol

I have a fantastic (as in weird) looking chromed elaboration of the same thing that I keep in a drawer just to be amazed by when I see it while looking for something else. I rap the edge of the jar lid on my cutting board if I have trouble or in worst case scenario run some hot water on the lid to expand it. Maybe I need a green doohickey too.

ETA: I also possess the worlds weirdest can opener. It is red and will remove the lid where it seals to the top of the can leaving a deadly knife sharp rim ready to slash your wrist. While there are others of this ilk this one looks like it was invented by rube Goldberg. I have these things left over from being the Empress of kitchen gadgets. People used to give them to me. I have cleared out my stash to the point of merely being a Princess.

I have a jar key and also a round rubber disc my sister-in-law gave me. The rubber disc really works on bottle tops too. The jar key I can use on my neighbor's gifts of jam sealed in mason jars.

Major arthritis in both hands as well as 2 trigger fingers on one hand and 1 on the other hand, makes the "weird looking" jar opener an absolute necessity in our kitchen! You can also use the rounded end of a pop bottle opener by gently lifting up with it to break the suction of the jar lids.

Ah, JarKey. I have three. Two plastic ones, but they are getting chipped up from using them on my home pressure-canned jars. I have one for small jars and one for wide mouth. I added in a metal JarKey which is stronger and should last a life time.

I do not have one but my mom does. I have no idea if it has a name on it. Next time I go, I will check.

I didn't even recognize what that gadget was. It looked like the foot measuring tool you'd see in shoe stores years aho, where the salesperson would measure your foot. For opening jars, this 66 year old lady with mild arthritis in my hands has a rubber grabby thing (in blue) or I'll thump it hard on the flloor or I'll run the metal lid under hot water. Finally, I'll ask my 230 pound son in law.
