Last October, as flames from wildfires ravaged large swaths of Northern California, a shaggy Great Pyrenees named Odin made international headlines when he refused to leave the pack of goats he tends daily. Odin, his sister and the goats all survived the fire that burned about 37,000 acres and killed nearly two dozen people in Sonoma County.
The protective pup’s story is heartwarming, and it’s hardly the only one out there. We’ve all read news accounts of hero pets who saved their loved ones as disaster loomed.
There was Boo, the cat who alerted her Ohio family to a carbon monoxide leak.
And Paula Godwin’s social media post went viral earlier this month after her golden retriever puppy, Todd, (shown here at left with Godwin and her other dogs, Arnie and Copper) jumped between her and a striking rattlesnake in Arizona.

Another photo Godwin shared of a swollen Todd, seen here, recovering from his snake bite got the attention of news outlets around the world.
In Illinois a few years ago, Lucky, a pet pig, was credited with waking up his humans when fire threatened their home.
Tell us: We want to hear your hero pet stories. Did your dog do something heroic during a fire or flood? Did your cat paw you awake in a burning house? Did your parrot sense an earthquake? Did your neighbor’s dog scratch at the door when floodwaters were rising? We want to know about it. Share your stories and photos in the Comments. You may see your experience featured in a future article on Houzz.

The other way Luke saved me was when my husband died, he came into my life from the shelter. He is a big dog, and his first night with me he laid down beside me and put his head on my husbands pillow. Each night I hear his breath, when I move his tail thumps, and if I cry he kisses away my tears. I have never gone to bed afraid, I know he is here to protect me.
How about 2 mini-doxies that saved me from a black bear? (The bear was ready to climb a tree, just with my 2 fur-babies barking at him.) These dogs may look like frou-frou dogs, but they are fearless!
My dog Dalai is a veggie hero. Dogs can enjoy many vegetables! Since eating more plant food is important I have written a children's vegetable cookbook. Dalai is always at my side when I write or cook in the kitchen. Hey, she might get lucky. She's my hero because she's always up for a good time, walking outdoors or eating a carrot.
