Roller shades would work....as for drapes behind your couch....Will only need about 4 inches of space behind your couch for drape to hang and draw correctly. Do you need privacy? White blinds might work better if you do.....along with drapes.

I love playing with rugs in rooms, so found some to show you ... mostly to get an idea of what you like (and don’t like) as far as designs, colors, styles, etc. I really like the warmer tones, but that’s just my own preference and you may want cooler tones. I agree with CDR's thoughts on furniture placement. You could use a linear electric fireplace like this with the t.v. mounted above it. I think they're much nicer looking than something with a mantle. It's clean and modern looking. Just be sure the fireplace is longer than the t.v. or it will look out of balance. If you put a sofa table behind the sofa in the bay window, it will keep the sofa pulled away from the baseboard heaters well enough for the heat to circulate. Then you can add a couple of lamps for ambient lighting. Two chairs (swivel are nice for going between conversation and t.v. watching) with a table between them for drinks and an area rug to pull it all together. You'll want to add art where the candle holder is on the wall I think, to add some life and color to the space. Keep the furniture smaller and with feet so it doesn't overwhelm the smaller space.

My sofa is at a side angle to the TV. The TV screen is huge, I can watch it comfortably from several angles in the room so I wouldn't obsess over the idea that the only good viewing spot for the TV is directly across. Plus you can get braces that move to angle it. The biggest ironic issue for hubs and I is that we both want to lay down in the family room and watch TV, often together. We'd love to be able to afford an L shaped sectional with one of those big stuffed ottomans. We have a futon in the family room but it looks bad pulled out into a bed, it makes us look lazy or something . . . :) Are you getting new furniture? In the meantime, move some chairs around and see what kind of arrangement floats your boat . . .
