It depends on the style you are going for. I personally love parquet floors in the correct context. I’m actually considering putting parquet in my master renovation. I will say yours looks to be in good condition.

Personally, I think they are dated and I would replace. However you could modernize by staining them in a dark stain.

All across the US, thousands of homeowners have bought houses built in the late 19th and early 20th century -- not because they look like houses built last year, but because these new owners love old houses, how they were laid out, how they were built, the old growth lumber that went into them, what they stand for.

Finally, these old houses have owners who appreciate what the houses were designed and built to be. If houses were alive, I'm sure they'd be relieved and grateful.

Over the years, these old homes have absorbed hundreds of thousands of dollars in repeated updates. Now their current owners are spending thousands more to reverse the updates and restore the houses' original glory.

But just imagine what it would be like if someone had a house from an earlier era that was well maintained and still had its original design and layout, even some of its original fittings.

Imagine that person carefully maintaining that house until someone who loved and appreciated its design was ready to own it.

Imagine that person being paid a premium price by a grateful buyer of this lovingly preserved historic home.

Just imagine all that, because that's all you can do.

It's not going to happen.

Because even though they know about the restorations, people still buy distinctive older houses, and then immediately start ripping them apart so they can make them look and work just like everyone else's new houses.

There are even people who will demolish and landfill the entire solid, well-built, old-growth-lumber existing house, so they can use the lot to build a brand-new slapped-together sawdust-and-Tinkertoys house that might not last even 75 years.

Is this advice? Heck, no. Am I saying that a 1980s home is somehow equal to an 1880s home Not at all. Am I suggesting that no one should ever modernize a house? Certainly not.

These are just some thoughts for you to maybe mull over, if you choose to, as you decide what to do with your well-preserved original flooring.

I have no great love of parquet floors, but -- given that they're in excellent condition -- I would not rip them out. Why throw away something that's perfectly functional to replace it with something that's almost the same?

Personally I hate parquet floors, especially the small, busy honey oak type that you have. But they are in good condition so maybe invest in doing other updates first before tackling the floor.

Your parquet floors are beautiful. They are part of your house. Please dont make your house something it isnt. I would remove the spindles, though, not because they are outdated (they are), but, because, they were never very nice or pretty even when houses were built with them, and a lot of people removed them, right after moving into their brand new house.

My parents stained their parquet dark when it was damaged in a hurricane. It showed every bit of dust. The spindles and chair rail are more in need of change. Why does a hall need chair rail? It emphasizes the long hall.

Why spend $15-$20 a square to remove hardwood and replace with hardwood? That's nuts. It's the beginning of going down the update/remuddle road. And for gosh sake, stay away from the creeping fog of gray tainting everything it touches too.

Well, the minute you rip those out or stain them dark, parquet that looks like yours is going to be the latest greatest hot trend. Dark floors were a trend that is already over. your floors are actually very nice; I would embrace them!

Stain or paint them black for a stunning look.

I'm not a fan of the look, but yours are in good shape. I bet if you fix up the rest of your house so you love it (and maybe toss down rugs) you might not even notice the floors.

i would go for a darker stain. Not too dark, more medium. Agree about the spindles.

What about changing that not so great transition from tile to the parquet.

Do something with the spindles....paint the chair rail to match the wall and hang artwork on the walls so you have something to look at. The floors are fine. And I bet you have other things to do with your money.

While I have never liked parquet flooring, I certainly would NOT tear it out. The floor looks to be in excellent condition, the wood is probably better quality than run-of-the-mill stuff available today AND the floor will mostly disappear when you add some runners & area rugs.

Those cheesey spindles and the silly chair rail need to be gone, yesterday, though. What were they thinking--protecting a narrow hallway from the backs of chairs????

So, what exactly do the words “modern look” mean for you? Could you post some inspiration photos? I would look to changing out other elements in the house as noted in comments above. I really don’t think parquet floors will hold you back...

IMo those were a cheap way to get a wood look floor and I would replace with hardwood for sure there is nothing historic about vheap HD parquet that was less expensive than even good laminate.

Have a contractor come out and look at the floors closely. If they could be refinished I think they would look really nice refinished with a more up to date color.

If I were considering tearing them out, I'd certainly try something like decoenthusiast posted with the black finish. I wouldn't do a dark brown/espresso, because it's going to be dated, like yesterday, but that black or a dark charcoal looks really modern and different enough to look very updated. If you don't like it or trying to keep it dust free, then replace it.

I agree with DavidR, so many historic houses being torn down to put up ultra modern houses. But there is a reason, that is what people want now. It breaks my heart to see. I’m completely redoing my condo although everything is in great shape - it was built in the 90s and everything is a gawd awful pinkish marble art deco look. Do i feel guilty tearing out everything that works just fine but is just ugly? Yes. I don’t think pink tile will ever come back. I don’t think the parquet will either but I could live with it - just not oak. I’d pull them out personally.

This is not a historic house with beautiful old parquet floors and I will tell you these ones are a PITA to refinish and almost always look bad.

I agree with elunia. Also, I recall seeing your parquet floor in French shelter magazines last year. Yes, the small squares. Told my neighbour about them because they were contemplating changing theirs as well. Unfortunately, I think I have purged said magazines so can't offer you the visual validation. Google isn't being helpful - giving me floor companies, not rooms.

I have these floors to in London . I don’t really like them however, they are in fab condition and they are an original feature which with the right furniture and wall colour will get your modern look. Mid century is bang on trend and won’t ever date.
Agreed with the spindles - sadly they are hideous :)
