Houzz Tour: Retro-Glam Condo Keeps It Cool in West Hollywood
Vintage finds, contemporary artwork and glamorous metallic details shine in this luxe-meets-eclectic space
When a 20-something artist wanted to put her mark on a midcentury high-rise condo in West Hollywood, California, she called on designer Caitlin Murray to create a glamorous yet comfortable space where she could highlight her collection of contemporary works. To start from scratch with a blank canvas, the 1960s condo was gutted from top to bottom. Studs were added to the walls to bring the condo up to code, and the kitchen was opened up by removing cabinets. During the rehab, floors were demolished and redone in a concrete-like surface. “It was carte blanche when it came to decorating the space,” Murray says.
The wall adjacent to the entry includes a vintage waterfall console table with gold
accents, industrial-inspired stools and bold Pop Art. “Entries are a good opportunity to welcome you into the space,” Murray says. “There’s room for some displays and a place to put your keys.”

During the renovation, the kitchen was opened up to the dining area by removing upper cabinets. Custom wood flat-panel cabinets were painted in Benjamin Moore’s Intrigue, and the gold veining in the Calacatta Gold marble countertops complements
the brass pulls on the cabinets.

“It was fun to do chunky oversized brass hardware, which acts like the jewelry of
the kitchen,” Murray says. Handblown Cedar & Moss brass pendant lights add a midcentury vibe to the bar while also acting as a transitional piece from the

A collection of art by the homeowner was arranged on the dining room wall to create a mini gallery. A lavender-dyed cowhide rug grounds the space, while rattan chairs from Anthropologie are paired with a table Murray had lacquered in a high-gloss black paint. A Maxhedron smoked-glass chandelier by Bec Brittain makes a bold statement hung from the flat-black ceiling. “I had to find something that balanced well with the kitchen pendants,” Murray says.
The glamorous yet comfortable living room features an antique Persian rug, blue velvet sofa from Anthropologie, a Jonathan Adler swivel chair covered in champagne velvet with a brushed-brass base, and abstract art from 1stdibs.
“I wanted to strike a balance between comfortable and whimsical — and all these different elements work together,” Murray says. “That’s what was fun about this project: The homeowner let me go nuts with the layers.”
Artist Julian Opie’s graphic portraits of passers-by jazz up the entrance to the peachy-pink powder room.
Benjamin Moore’s Summer Sun Pink walls are juxtaposed with Eastern Promise floor tile by Ann Sacks. An oversized Restoration Hardware sink is flanked by Arteriors sconces. “I like doing things that seem a little surreal and whimsical,” Murray says. “For this particular bathroom, it was fun to play with the balance and size.”
The Ploum sofa by Ligne Roset steals the show in the cozy den. Underneath, a vintage Turkish rug centers the space, and Anthropologie stools provide extra seating. A Richard Mosse print titled Hombo Walikale hangs above the sofa. “That is a really special piece that as an art collector she wanted to have center stage,” Murray says.
The pattern on Flat Vernacular’s Finisterra Azurite wallpaper is reminiscent of dreamy clouds
and makes for a soothing backdrop in the bedroom. Murray created a collected and boho chic boudoir by pairing the Anthropologie canopy bed with vintage accents like an African juju hat and Hollywood Regency-inspired nightstands.

In the corner of the bedroom, Murray created a reading nook with a vintage Warren Platner lounge chair with original mohair upholstery and Noir’s metal beehive bookshelf. Artwork created by the homeowner and Damien Hirst adorns the wall.
A tranquil blue, gray and white color palette sets the tone for a spa-like experience in
the master bath, with gray penny tile, Silestone’s White Zeus countertops and Eskayel’s Head Hunter Mist wallpaper on the ceiling.
