Comments (23)Well, I spoke with Pella customer service today. They said I cannot do a sash replacement with the particular window I have. I have a circa-1991 Pella Pro-line window. Ugh - don't blame me, these awful windows came with the house. Anyway, Pella told me that their Pro-lines today use screws, while Pro-lines in 1991 were glued. So it won't be possible to get a replacement sash for my existing window. They said perhaps I could get a handyman-carpenter to replace the rotted part of the sash, but it will always look "repaired". Their recommendation was to replace the window with the current Pella Pro-line in order to match the rest of the windows. Although the Pro-lines' construction is different now from 1991, on the outside it looks identical. The contractor who came by yesterday is going to email me an estimate. He said he recommends I go to the next level up in Pella from the Pro-lines due to the lower quality of the Pro-lines. So ballpark he said that to replace one window would be "just under $1000", but if I replaced all 5 windows I'd get economies of scale. I am going to get a few more quotes just for the one-window replacement, as I thought $1000 sounded very high. Comments (5)I have a stucco home and used Marvin Ultimate Casement Windows. The installers I used are home builders with over 25 years experience and they measured the original windows about three times and order the windows including the brickmolding attached from the factory. They took the original windows out and inserted the new windows in with no harm to the stucco. They also before hand; scored the internal wood trim and remove the trim very carefully to be re-used after the new windows were installed. Worked out perfectly on all windows. I was amazed. Only very minor touch up on the internal trim needed for the 14 windows. Everything was original trim installed back! The installers were a huge premium in labor cost but well worth the cost since no repairs were called for afterwards to the home itself. Nice and clean - surgically removed and put back....See MoreFull Replacement Marvin Windows with brick exterior
Comments (8)Klem1 - I didn't expect that response. I thought the purpose of these forums is to get answers to questions that people post--isn't it? I explained in my OP that the contractor was 2 hours late and was rushed and abrupt. It would actually be wrong of me to have him spend his time to answer my follow-up questions when I have no intention of using him. Don't you think that would be wrong for me to do that? And I think it unlikely he'd answer me anyway, given how he behaved when he came to my house. I hope that this response soothes your outrage. Lkbum_gw - the contractor specifically said that this bedroom's windows would not have the issue my other bedroom's windows have because of the brick. He even pointed to the brick and said, "see, this is brick, so I can set the windows back more". I didn't know what he meant. I will look at the windows more closely as you suggested....See MoreE Weiss
