Exterior color ideas (Brick, Stucco, Roof)

The slab is about to be poured, so we are trying to finalize our exterior color scheme. I have attached the 2D drawings of the house, so hopefully some of you will have some good advice for us.

The house is NE facing, but mostly north. It's a cul de sac 1.5acre lot, and the rear is wooded. We will have a fence around the cleared area.

We are looking for a lighter theme, so we are leaning towards a sacked brick of a 75% white to 25% ivory mortar (hoping this creates an off white look without being too tan). For the stucco we are leaning towards SW Mega Greige. The roof we currently lean charcoal.

All of this is open to new suggestions. We are terrible at this, and are completely lost if this current scheme will even work. We are not set on shutters, so we are willing to scrap these if you all think it would look better without.

Also we are a bit concerned that the roof may be a bit too encompassing. The large area between the stucco and the 3 window curved wall makes me feel the roof will dominate the look. We are bad at visualizing this in 3D, so if you think we are off base please let me know.

If there is any other info I can provide please let me know. One mistake on the rendering is that on the side views the stucco is on the reverse side of the house on each image.

This is a common way of reducing the overall height of a roof.

Use a lower slope roof plane in the back of the house.

Another option is to keep the side to side pitch at 10, and reduce the front to back pitch. Here it's down to 8, which reduces all the ridge heights.

There seems to be room for a media room in various areas. Here there is one above the garage that has a full height wall facing the rear.

You are right!

Fortunately, we humans never seen buildings in 2-D elevations, such as depicted on drawings. The purpose of these drawings is convey needed information about the construction of a building, and not to illustrate what a building will actually look like in 3-D. For that, perspectives are necessary.

So your huge roof will not look as huge and overbearing as it appears on the elevations. But it will dwarf your house and dominate your view of the house.

Unfortunately, this is a common occurance when a drafter or CAD operator designs a house by unilaterally focusing on a floor plan, and thereafter simply plopping roof trusses on the walls of the floorplan.

Looking at your roof plan, and floor plan outline, there's a quick and easy approach for a completely different roofing scheme which would greatly reduce your roof massing, but it requires eliminating or changing the roof over what I assume is a back porch.

I hope natural light in the interiors of your house is not a major criterion, since you appear to have a very large, deep house, almost square in shape. It's going to be dark in there, regardless of your orientation.

Yes we are roofing the back porch. This is something we definitely want done, as we spend plenty of time out there. We live in the south where it rains A LOT>

The kitchen and den area are an open floorplan, so I expect the natural light to reach those from the tall porch windows. I am concerned the large porch will limit the amount that reaches in; however, we prefer to have this large porch over natural light. We are using light paints inside the house to (hopefully) accommodate the lack of natural lighting (BM Balboa Mist for house, BM Thunder for kitchen/den).

Part of the reason the roof is so high is that we have a bonus media room being built upstairs, which is the only upstairs real estate. We do not want a two story house. Contractor says this room creates obstacles with the roof design which is why it gets large in that spot.

Would a dormer help break this monotony of the roof? My concern is that a dormer would be off balance in that location.

I got outvoted on sage, but we found a dark blue color at Sherwin WIlliams that I think will look really nice. We have to get some samples and try them out to test the different lighting. It's dramatic and I like it. No one else on the street has this color. What do you think? Thank you everyone for your help. It's nice to get outside perspective.

You have a lovely house ..white stucco with some charcoal grey with blue undertones for some trim areas and garage door would be very refreshing in a sea of beige to taupe track homes, a kind of California modern look. Changing the look of the garage door to either match your pergola color or a trim color will go a long way to update , giving you great curb appeal. The red tile roof gives you some thing to run with for bumping up the style. I would add some Saltillo tile for the porch and walkway to repeat that roof color , some new lighting that's larger in scale and some more structural plantings such as blue agave.

Thank you Marylee! i Love these images. I’m thinking we go for a creamy white stucco (Swiss Coffee or Navajo White).. I was trying to go more contemporary than Mediterranean, but these colors just make sense with the roof.

Not wrong, great idea! I love vintage homes that get creative with colors. :) I hope others will chime in with ideas. I guess I’d just start trying some samples to see what really feels right to you. And researching — search cottage colors, stucco and brick homes, Tudor colors, etc. Even though your house isn’t a Tudor, Arts and Crafts, or whatever, you might still find inspiration with them. It is challenging with having three materials to coordinate, I’m hoping someone can do some mock-ups! Re: the teal … I’m not sure regarding application. I wish I could mock it up for you … doing just the trim, or trim, siding, and stucco.

Is it above the entry? If you have a room on the 2nd floor, then you have a 2 story house.

Was this space added as an afterthought?

The roof can be changed and lowered if the roof over the back porch is flat (2/12 pitch) and the larger pitched roofs are reconfigured to fit the remaining floor plan.

The challenge is the location and size of the second floor habitible space. We don't know where it is, how large it is, or the need for windows for exiting and natual light.

But...it is certainly possible to reduce that huge roof shown in the initial postings.
