Time has passed for garage sales?
Comments (9)I love the following story from an estate sale of my parents things a few years ago. My sister had priced this hand trowel at $2. Before a buyer was interested, I had yet to see it. Well, a possible buyer brought this shovel to me and asked if I would take .25 cents for it. I was shocked...this thing had never been used! Plus, I could tell that it was an oldie, but goodie. The stamped label was clear and crisp. I couldn't believe that my sister had only $2 on it. I would have put $5 on it. I pointed all this out to the buyer, and stood firm on the price. Well..... The woman kept the shovel and then walked up to my sister and asked the same thing...25 cents? Before my sister could answer, I walked up, grabbed it out of the woman's hands and turned to my sister and said..."I think I will keep this. I'll give you $2." The look on that woman's face was priceless! I know it was tacky of me, but she made me so darn mad. This shovel has indeed been an "oldie, but goodie." The label is now worn, so I cannot read the maker, but it is sturdy and sure brings back memories of that garage sale day. Our sale went pretty well. What we didn't keep or sell, went to Habitat for Humanity. Another thing that I could not get over was the stealing, or trying to steal of items....See MoreHoliday & Tablescape Garage Sale Finds! Comments (13)OMGosh, Jeanne, you really hit a jackpot....I think you just gave Candy a run for her Bargain Queen title. LOL. At least for one round. So MANY wonderful things that I hardly know where to start. But the big Santa in the first photo really is fabulous. I'd have gladly paid a LOT more for him. The little Elf reading the book is just darling, and perfect for you. But all the elves are cute and the little fairy girl too. I'm so glad Dollbaby now has her very own cloche. You'll have to find her some miniatures to put in it. I have to applaud your restraint, coming home with only two boxes. I shudder to think of the load I'd have bought, and no place to put any of it. The only restraint I have is to NOT GO shopping in the first place. LOL. You did good, Girl. And should be grinning all week over it. hugs, Karen...See MoreTips for having garage sale with another person?
Comments (13)Yeah, watch out for groups who show up at yard sales. Especially groups of men. It is just not 'normal' for groups of guys to go tag sale shopping as a pastime. Groups, any group, often have one try to distract the seller and then the others make their way into the house. If they get caught they act innocent and pretend they thought there was "more stuff for sale inside". Keep doors locked at all times! Shoplifting is common with groups and sometimes they are just caseing the place to come back later for robbery. Do not answer any personal questions no matter how friendly people seem or even if they claim to be neighbors 'from down the street'. "Are you guys moving soon?" "You live in this big house all alone?" "Do you have any electronics/power tools/antiques inside that you might sell?" And DO NOT allow anyone to 'come back later' to buy something. By this I mean, it's OK if they have paid for a large item and set a time to come back for it, but many times after a yard sale people try ringing the doorbell later in the evening or the next day when they think you are alone, because they decided they *really wanted* a certain item after all. Well, too bad! After a yard sale check all your doors and windows to make sure that someone did not unlock or leave one ajar, one so they could come back later. It is unfortunate that is has to be like this but 'better safe than sorry' and 'better rude than raped'....See MoreThanks to Crafty_lady and her DD.......
Comments (35)Chris - We just moved to this area and the people here are so amazingly friendly and generous. You wouldn't believe the stuff that people put out for free here. We went out yesterday to pick up the stained glass and stopped at a few garage sales along the way. We got some really cool stuff - I'll have to start a new post though, this one's getting kinda long, lol. Slow - Thanks for the anniversary wishes! We had a fabulous day. Went for an afternoon cruise on Kempenfelt Bay, aboard the "Serendipity Princess", then DH took me shopping for a new outfit and out for a scrumptious dinner at a really cool little bistro that we've been wanting to try for a while now. He's such a sweetie and I feel incredibly lucky to have him in my life. Stjohnsgypsy and Katie (and everybody else!) - Another free classifieds site I've had really good luck with is Kijiji. In Canada it's www.kijiji.ca and in the US it's www.kijiji.com Good luck, I hope everyone finds some new treasures! Hrsg - Thanks, I can't wait to start using them! Ann - Thank you, I hope you have TWICE the luck! Ronnie - I looked on Mapquest and it's 1112.50 miles from Barrie, Ontario to Harrison, AR. Three hours - how fast do you drive woman?????? Guess I'll have to hang on to your half for now, lol. GGG - Isn't it awesome? I was practically drooling in her studio and definitely plan on giving her my business in the future. I think I just might do some Christmas shopping there this year. She also takes old, damaged photos (or new) and puts them on tiles. These aren't decals, the way she explained it, it's like an ink tattoo on the unglazed tile and then she does the glazing herself after. I think it would be so cool if her good deed generated some business for her. Hope you find something you like! I am in Barrie, how neat that you grew up in the area. Wow, you sure ended up moving a pretty good distance away! Whew, this is getting pretty long-winded again! Sorry for rambling on. As soon as I take some pics, I'll start another thread for the new stuff. Cindy...See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
