For 9' ceilings, tall or stacked uppers?
Comments (21)holligator I love the kitchen! Thank you everyone for your responses. The issue of "stacked=busy/limiting" really ate away at me over the weekend. So I did some more research..... Over the weekend I looked at more pictures and nearly googled myself to death looking for ideas. Finally I called the KD and asked him to re-design the uppers using 42" cabinets - the maximum for that manufacturer. This means now they will not be flush with the ceiling. My motivation is that I think 42" cabinets are more useful than 30s topped with 15s. As my mother says, if you don't see it often enough when you look in your cabinet, you'll forget it's there, and then what's the point in having it? Anyway, after I got the drawings, I colored them in like I did with the originals, then passed them around looking for critiques (Mom, DH, and an independent KD). In a nutshell, the 42" cabinets won out. It's simpler, cleaner, and I think gives me more accessible space. It's also several $K less. So what I will have is a to-ceiling corner pantry. Over the fridge and wall ovens (on either side of the pantry) will be "nooks" for putting some decorative things (vase, whatnot) which will reach to the ceiling. The trouble is that for the rest of the upper cabinet run, there will be 9" from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling. No matter what, I will be putting lighting up there (up-lighting). My choices for finishing that area are: 1. Leave it alone with a gap to the ceiling. 2. Build a Soffit down to the cab tops but have it recede (not flush with the front of the cabs - to leave room for the up-lights)This is definitely not my favorite choice since that would be a change order and the drywall is up. 3. Build a decorative wood trim piece in the same dark espresso stain as the cabinets, with geometric cut-outs to allow light to shine though - any handy wood-worker, or I/DH for that matter, should be able to come up with something to prop up there/snap in place so we still have access to the lights. Any other ideas or thoughts on what I'm trying to do? I like my #3 idea because it's different, but not too busy. I'd love to hear other ideas or even "noooo don't do that because xyz!" if it keeps me out of trouble....See Moreceiling height cabinets? (9 foot ceiling)
Comments (10)If you go to the ceiling with all the cabs you can also create visual interest by choosing which cabs to put glass in and which not to. You can then use some of the non-glass uppers to store trays and platters. How tall are you? I'm 5'8" and can reach the vertical tray storage and the first row platter storage flat-footed, and the 2nd row platters on tiptoe. Since the fridge/pantry cabs aren't recessed back over a countertop like regular uppers they're a lot more accessible. So depending on your height you may be able to reach your over-fridge/pantry uppers without a step stool (unlike regular over-cab uppers which are generally a little higher plus set back)....See More9' ceiling upper cabinets: 30" plus 18" or 36" plus 12"?
Comments (19)maire_cate, KDs often have a pretty limited selection of hardware available through them, and it's whatever is "hot" right now. I did NOT want what was hot - I wanted polished solid brass pulls as they worked far better in my kitchen and "warmed up" my gray cabinets. No one local had ANYTHING! Told me it was a "dated look". To heck with that - it was what I wanted! And I knew it wasn't "dated" as polished brass was showing up in some UBER high end kitchens. So online I went. I finally discovered Look in the Attic and found several contenders. When I called to order samples (Yes, one pays but there will be a credit if one returns them and buys from the company, which I did), the owner said that yes, he hears all the time that polished brass is not in style, but he sells more of it than any other finish! I adore my pulls - just what I wanted. Solid brass, heavy, stunning...and they were about $10 each -- quite affordable. I did order extras "just in case"......See More27” wide upper cabinets in 9’ H kitchen
Comments (15)Lana, please note that the Barnes Custom Builders cabinet is full overlay. The difference between door width on inset cabinets versus full overlay is significant. I have two sets of 33" inset cabinets. Each door is 15.25". If you are planning 27" inset cabinet with double doors, each door will be about 12.25",, depending on the size of your stiles. That's a very narrow door, and the scale may not look appropriate. Since we haven't seen your layout, I am just guessing that it might look better to have a single 24" inset door on either side of the hood. If you post your layout, you may get some other suggestions....See MoreM Miller
