what height doors for 9 foot ceilings upstairs?
Comments (2)Definitely 6'8". Your door height to ceiling height ratio downstairs is 8 to 11 or 0.73 to 1. If you use 6'8" doors upstairs with the 9 ft ceilings, you will have a door height to ceiling height ration of 6.67 to 9 or 0.74 to 1. You can't get much closer than that. 7 ft tall doors would probably look okay but they'll be a bit taller in proportion to the 9 ft ceilings than the door height to ceiling height proportions downstairs. Besides, 7 ft tall doors are a custom size at most companies which means that they'll cost you a whole lot more than otherwise identical 6'8" doors from the same company....See Moreshaker cabinetry to 9 foot ceiling with crown molding or a space
Comments (12)When the cabinets are mounted with the top above the window height, you needn't worry about the projection of the crown interfering with the window molding. If they are lower, then yes, you need to account for the projection of the crown in the design. Crowding window molding is not a great look, either way. I try to go no closer than 3" to a molding, and some kitchens demand more negative space than that. What you run into with very tall cabinets is that it renders the kitchen off visually. I prefer transom cabinets that can break up that long vertical line visually. This is what 9' ceilings with 48"H transom cabinets (30+18 combo) looks like with a 6" cove molding. The cove really needs a riser to account for an out of level ceiling and to make up the tiny bit of difference between the molding height and overall height....See MoreCan I put a 5 foot tall window at counter height with 9 foot ceilings?
Comments (10)@Amy, building to PPF's drawing using an engineered header to carry the 2nd floor load will cost your builder more than slapping a couple of 2x12's above the windows and below the doubled top plate (I suspect that's where his 15.5" came from: 1/2" window RO gap, 11 1/4" for the 2x12, 3" for the doubled top plate - which is more like 14 3/4" but who's counting?). How much more? Maybe ~$100 for an 8' beam, but that's a SWAG without knowing anything about the loads from the 2nd floor and roof....See More9 foot ceilings, 7 foot doors, 6 foot windows. Comments (7)Martina Collom Design oh that’s such a relief! Would you mind posting a photo of your home from the inside? I started second guessing it all this morning! I can’t decide if I want to do 6’ windows or 5.75’ windows! So many decisions. We are planning for all of our doors to be 7’, that’s why I might be leaning towards the 5.75’ doors. Because if we do 6’ windows and 7’ doors, our windows are only 1’ off the ground. I think that it may look a little funky. Idk. I’m not too worried about the added cost of safety glass. We are building a small house and so it only adds about $400 to the overall build cost....See Moredermnp
