Canna for Valentines Day
Comments (1)What a great Valentine idea! I guess it's possible that they froze, but canna rhizomes are pretty hardy; mine stay in the ground year-round, & they've survived 9-degree nights that I know of. can't help on the toxicity question, but... cannas are in every grandmother's garden around here, everybody I know grew up with them, & we're all still here! Lots of plants, like oleanders are "poison" if ingested, so, uh, don't eat 'em. Hope your wife liked the cannas!...See MoreHappy Valentine's Day Fellow Fig Lovers!
Comments (4)Happy Valentine's Day from 'sunny' SoCal where it is snowing in Ramona (elev 2000')! Unheard of but we actually have a good 4" on the ground and it's still falling. I know those in northern states are saying what's the big deal? Well for here it is! We only get 7"-9" of rain in a good year. I don't think this will hurt my VdB which broke dormancy last month. I have 7 of my fig trees out doors. Only the one has broken dormancy but I'm sure they will be OK. We are supposed to be back in the 60's tomorrow. Since I'm at work and my snow chains are at home, I'll be staying elsewhere tonight as the hill home is too steep to make with snow. Talk about unexpected! Comments (2)I plan to plant as soon as the snow melts off the beds in my main garden. Going through my seed box, I found corn salad, baby bok choi, and lots of lettuce and carrots. I'll buy some new spinach seed, too. Those will be seeded right away, covered with a row cover, and will begin sprouting as they will over the next couple of months, with some more snow and maybe even rain before spring is official. I'll also start leeks, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and cardoon in the house by Valentine's day. Oh, and I'll start dropping spinach and corn salad seeds in the empty spots in my winter garden (low) tunnel as soon as I get the spinach seed. Um, and there's one last bunch of the fall-sown spinach to pick. I feel a salad coming on. Catherine...See MoreHappy Valentine’s Day Everyone! Cooking, or eating out?
Comments (26)LOL, 2many, I think Sriracha tastes like vinegar and hot peppers, but can't taste any other flavors. I'm a wimp, I like just a little heat but I don't want the enamel on my teeth to bubble. I think if it's so hot I can't enjoy the flavors of the food, it's kind of pointless, but Elery loves heat, the hotter the better. That is one mean looking panty liner, BTW. (grin) Sleevendog, I found a similar potato in my storage: I left it propped up on the counter for Elery to find and he didn't even notice it, LOL. So much for that Valentine's Day thought! Thanks for the sriracha tip on hummus, Elery would love that. I suppose I could just mix it in at the end, so the entire batch isn't "contaminated"? (snicker) AnnT, the steak looks delicious, as always, and although I don't care for very many hot chilies I love peppercorns. It's a different kind of heat. Annie...See More- 7 years ago
