Add pillars to 2nd floor balcony and retractable privacy screen?
Comments (4)This place looks like it might be able to provide the right type of retractable screen, eh? I called and while it was a brief call, the man said they can be more sheer for sun-blocking only or else can be more for privacy where you can't see through - and he said they come in something like a hundred different colors, and can be retracted either manually or w/ a motor. :) http://www.lasvegassolarscreens.com/patio_shades.html...See MoreFront Door Dilemma
Comments (122)Pros sometimes give conflicting advice here. Sometimes they even contradict themselves. Sometimes people hire pros out in the non-virtual world and then pros on this forum contradict them. It's true that there are design principles that are incontrovertible, and it's also true that sometimes people have other equally compelling factors at play. Time, liquidity, time in combination with information...all these and more can play a role. My sense is that linking the appropriateness of internet manners to the legitimacy of design principles or the emotionally difficult nature of the critique process is a false equivalency. If the desired outcome is adherence to a tacit protocol, the protocol should be less tacit in nature and should be referenced (e.g. linked) when the protocol is broken. That facilitates learning and dialogue. So does the Wild West approach. All roads lead to Rome. Or is it home? That said, my pick for Houzzer to have a beer with is one of the harshest speakers I've ever seen here. This has absolutely nothing to do with getting free design advice. I would just love to meet that person. Pretty sure its geographically prohibitive, but just sayin'....See MoreHelp! Dream house porch isn't so dreamy...
Comments (16)Continue the roof line onto the Gable of the garage - Mirror the front porch WITH same pillars design. EMBRACE the design YOU HAVE and work the plan. Go with stone steps in between each pillar to ground as opposed to skirt. On Garage Gable with farmers porch there too. wrap the front porch through to the gable garage with farmers porch - Pillars and all. A rendering would be interesting to see how this works. Hanging outdoor ceiling fans might work as well as pocket LED recessed down-lighting on porch. The porch now becomes the iconic theme for what is clearly a modern traditional almost center hall colonial... "With Stone Shoulders"! not so bad.. The opposite side of the garage Gable can mirror the same. Same with the back porch Farmers Roof to field stone pillars to deck to stone steps to ground (open-concept) no rails back deck to ground....See MoreStairs vs ramp on new build front porch
Comments (34)"There is plenty of misinformation passed around on houzz.com ADA requirements are among them." Charles: Here is my first post on this thread: "Don't do a ramp that's not ADA compliant please, at least rise-wise. That means no more than a 1 in 12 rise. So if it's 3 feet of rise from driveway to doorstep, you'll need a 36 foot long ramp plus landings as you can only rise 30" at a run. Looks closer to 4 feet to me, so with the required landings, you could be looking at close to 60 feet of ramp. Your first picture is much too steep and a dangerous mess; the second looks just a tad steep to me." My second post was a clarification for JuneKnow. My third post was to agree with RES2 that the ADA is not required in most residential situations. No where on this thread have I said that ADA standards are required for single family residences. Not a single place. I have not engaged in any "misinformation". I stand by my position that ADA standards are good residential building practice. If you can make an argument that I'm wrong, please do so, however, you may not imply I've said things I have not....See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
