Andersen French Door Latch Problem
Comments (30)Looking at replacing my THIRD full latch mechanism on an Andersen french door. These things are solidly riveted together. Just drilled out rivets on an old one to see whats what. I've fixed the springs in many old (and new) mortice locks as the boxes are screwed together, not riveted. Andersen sucks that way. They don't want you to be able to fix these but buy a new one at $300 plus. And the weak link? A flimsy broken spring! The internal engineering is archaic! These should be serviceable, no question!!!...See Moredoor from garage to the house-lock or no lock?
Comments (37)The door from the garage directly into the house is the most vulnerable access to your house. Once a thief is in the garage, he can work unobserved to access the locks on the entry door. On one house I owned, the garage was attached but didn't access the house directly. You had to exit the garage and then use another door to access the house. I received an insurance discount because there was no direct access to the house from the garage. And while locks cannot prevent all burglaries, you want to make it more difficult for the thief so that they will go someplace else....See MoreLock Your Car Doors Overnight, Zucchini
Comments (5)The zucchini have some wind protection from the other plants growing to their windward. The pumpkins are in a bit of a jumble but haven't been rolled up too bad in that location. I once encouraged a neighbor to plant grapes along the southern edge of his garden. I don't always have good advice and don't know how much of a struggle those vines have but I'm sure that they help protect his annual vegetable garden to the leeward. I look over at a large pile of rocks out there. A farmer piled them a century ago, maybe. The alfalfa grows so green and looks so tender on the north side of that pile. The rocks must be just under 6' above grade, higher in places because I can't see over them everywhere. They don't block all that much summer sunlight since the sun rides so high and rises & sets so far in the north, this time of year. I'm envious of that alfalfa but not sufficiently to make him a deal on a small percentage of those rocks, showing up over there with the wheelbarrow. Comments (94)Has anyones lock fault problem been intermittent? A few times over the life of my machine prior to this latest problem I had the door fault beep and if I pushed the door and cancelled it was still locked but if I ran a drain/spin it would unlock. Maybe this happened 1-2 times per year. Then the current problem happened and I just couldnt get it to unlock untill I powered the machine off for 15 min. I managed to do a few loads that day - but then it happened again. Took multiple times tripping the circuit breaker (plug is not easily accessible) and eventually I got it unlocked. Ran a drain/spin cycle to test -- and it faulted and wouldnt open. This was when I started posting here and scheduled service (which is coming today). Eventually, I left the circuit off for a few hours and when I powered back on the door unlokced. I have done about 10 loads without the fault or failure to unlock. So now not really sure what to do -- the service person is coming today (for another appliance too so I didnt cancel) and perhaps I want to ID the parts with them and get a quote even if I wait. Just strange it was so stubborn and seemed so broken but now has worked for that many loads. I will have him look at my problem with not being able to do the manual open. If I can figure this out the 3D printed part would help if this comes back....See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years ago
