Professional Advice Need on A/C & Heating
Comments (2)Baldloonie, Tks vm for your comment! My original think is to use this new installed HP as AC and heat in case the two old heating system faded out in the future. If the HP can't supply enough heat in the severe winter in the Northwest, it may no fully serve my original purpose. I read a lot of comment on this forum regarding HP and they claimed the newer model can generate enough heat even in below 32 degree. Is it true? Is there any HP user in the Northeast can share their experience?...See MoreAdvice Need on A/C & Heating System
Comments (1)1. A heat pump should be able to provide decent heat down to below 30 degrees (probably 20-30 degrees it would struggle). Heat pumps have electric heat as backup. You want the electric heat so you don't get cold air during defrost. If you want to use your other heating system as backup, I don't see why that would be a problem either; you would just manually turn it on and off. Is your current heating system costing you a lot of money to operate, and is this why you're looking into replacement? If so, heat pumps can provide quite a bit of energy savings. Can you post your price for gas and electric. Tigerdunes hopefully can advise you on the cost savings aspect of the decision. Ask the dealers who come for estimates about heat pumps, and see what they think about your particular case....See MoreHeat pump choices for first timer. Advice??
Comments (6)First of all I dislike the way dealers/GCs give tier pricing to new homeowners for new construction. No transparency. It is meaningless without complete model numbers. I will assume your new home will have excellent top of line building/insulation qualities. It should. If going all electric and that seems to be the better choice than paying for expensive propane even in a DF system, I would want a HP system that has electronic demand defrost. Correct sizing is important. Hard to believe you would need a 3 ton system unless it was 2 stage. I don't care for any of the HP brands listed in your post. Here is my general minimum spec sheet. Here is my general spec sheet for new system.both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler Full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty on parts and compressor My personal recommendation is Trane/AmStd or if interested in Carrier Greenspeed and Bryant Extreme HP for their higher 12 HSPF heating efficiency. Pricey though. Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new system that did not have electronic demand defrost. IMO...See MoreNeed Advice...First time Sowing Indoors
Comments (6)Hi lillivewire87: I would like to tell you a little story which may help you. Last spring, I lost all of my tomato seedlings due to an infection of some sort. I have been pre-sprouting my seeds and growing them on under simple canadian tire fluorescent lights for many years, so I thought I would have to head to a nursery, but a friend of mine told me not to. He said tomatoes grow very fast so you should be OK starting them now. It was May 17 when I set my seeds to sprout in paper towels on my TV box. Over May 21-25, they were all well sprouted, planted up into 4 inch pots and placed OUTDOORS. I planted Yellow Italian, Sophie's Choice, Red Beefsteak, San Marzano , and 42 Days. By June 24, they were healthy little seedlings, and were planted in the ground. My harvest was a bit late, started mid-August, but I had a full harvest, lots for salads and sauces, and still have some canned. I don't know what zone you are in and what your frost dates are, but I am in Zone 5a Ottawa. But that experience saved me lots of hassles: daily trips to the basement to water; making sure I watered with chamomile tea to prevent damping off; sprinkling cinnamon to keep fungus gnats at bay; and that most time consuming task of hardening off!! I have lost seedlings to hardening off because I forgot the seedlings out too long. I will not be growing tomatoes under lights anymore. You may want to consider this as an alternative and save yourself lots of work and worry. Good luck!!...See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
