Tragic news for a very close friend of mine

My friend Pat are very good friends. She and her husband rode in the Ride for Dad for years and we met them when Tom was the Honorary Captain the year he died. Her husband and Tom passed within 2 months of each other and Pat and I really became close.

She and I go for toots in her convertible, and she hosts "game nights" with several friends. We play pool, play cards, shuffleboard, darts. Food and music. I love going. The white-out is an adult water bottle!

Anyway, her son was rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. They did surgery and he was in the hospital for several weeks due to complications. He passed away last week, and he was only 43. Leaving a wife and 3 kids. She only has a daughter now, losing her husband and son. What a shock.

Well, it has been a tough month for me and my family. We would have celebrated Wayne's 68th birthday today. It has been quiet around here even with the shelties. All our kids are out of town or out of province and although I talk with them regularly, it is just not the same in this old house. I miss Wayne so much and still doesn't seem real at times. As you have expressed Terry, there is a large void where his large presense was and the absense of his voice is deafening. Even though I go through the motions of life every day, it still feels like I just want time to stand still! I am so grateful that I have such supportive people around me and my fellow garden webbers to communicate with. I look forward to the spring and I look forward to ending this chapter in this old house. In the meantime, I am keeping myself busy with my sewing and clearing out what is no longer needed here. Peggy,I have been unable to see the garden for a couple of weeks now thanks to all the white stuff we got but I have named my new peonies after each and every one of you on this forum. Guys are red and white ones! Ladies are pink! :) I have stored them in the garage in peat moss and sand. Hopefully everyone will survive the winter. Lynn, the dogs are definately keeping me busy and I have to do poop patrol now. :$ Good grief! Ingrid, I am planning on a trip out to see you when ever you are ready for company providing the roads are clear. I look forward to getting out in the country! Cindy, I'm so happy to have met you but sad for the circumstances. Thank you so very much for the casseroles. You are a great cook! Ahh yes, the math skills are really horrible (I don't know if this is just an epidemic in WV or if the whole US is calculator spoiled). I'll never forget one time I was at McDonald's and my total came to something like $4.96 and I gave her a $5...she messed up the register and was completely lost as to how much to give me back. I said "it's just 4 cents, don't worry about it"...but she said "well, then my register will be off"...so I waited for her to go get her supervisor who proceeded to use a calculator to figure up my change. I was completely dumbfounded. I'm not sure those were the exact amounts..but it was very simple math...so sad. The bad thing is I've seen several examples similar to this. For a short while while I was in college, I worked at Shoney's. I ended up quitting after about a month or so because the supervisor kept forcing me to work over when I had exams yo study for and things I really needed to get home to...but when I went in to quit, the manager came into the office and tried to talk me out of it because they had been having trouble finding people who can count back change! Amazing to me.

Worst movie experience was just lately. Ed and I got to the movie theater on time (which is a small miracle for us). We buy snacks and then hand the usher our tickets and he directs us to the theater that ours is playing in. We sit there for 20 minutes of commercials and I am getting antsy because the movie should have started by now. Then there is some more trivia junk playing for 10 more minutes, finally I got mad and walked out to the usher. I complained and he just looks at me kind of stupidly and tells me I can get a refund if I like. I tell him that is not the point. Some of us pay babysitters to go out and expect to only be gone so long! I call home, tell the sitter we will be later than I thought and go back in to the movie. After another 15 minutes of trailers the movie started... It turned out that the little doofus directed us to the wrong theater that was playing the same movie at a later time. D'OH! I wanted to bean him with a Goober!

I have never understood the unsupervised children within 10000 yards of water. I almost drownd when I was 15! We too were at a party and mom assumed of all the adults there that surely someone (most likely the owners of the pool) could swim. Well, they couldn't. I was toting my younger brother on my shoulders and slipped down into the deep end. The shallow end was abnormally small. I was used to it being half and half....this pool was not. I had my brother on my shoulders (he couldn't swim at all) and his head was above water. I didn't throw him off because I knew he would drown. Instead I waited to be rescued. I remember hearing the screams while I prayed. I passed out before anyone came. My mom who was a very weak swimmer jumped in and pushed us back into the shallow end. She thought I was dead. I was under water for a little over two minutes and no one there thought there was any possible way I could be alive. The main concern was saving my little brother. My brother almost drowned my mom with his panicking. From that day on my mom would not let us attend pool parties AT ALL unless my dad could go. If we spent the night at a friends her first question was always "Do you have a pool?" She will tell you that that was one of the worst and most scary moments of her entire life. It's such a tragedy that this little girl didn't get as lucky as me:(

Oh, that is so tragic for her and the rest of his family. I imagine outliving a child is one of the most difficult things a parent can go through.

I am so sorry to hear this, Jasdip. Losing a child must be awful under any circumstance or at any age. May you all find peace.

My good buddy called me yesterday after she & her DH returned from a visit with their daughter in another state. Their DD is now under hospice care from matastatic breast cancer and not expected to be with us much longer. They will return soon to be there with her if possible. Their DD is 41 and has fought a very aggressive form of breast cancer that doesn’t respond well to any treatments. She has no children but it doesn’t make it any easier on her husband and family.

Yes, how devastating and terrible. My heart goes out to anyone who loses a loved one.

I was talking with my aunt recently - her husband died from brain cancer at a similar age, and she said his mother said to her, "Why couldn't it have been me instead?"

Jasdip, I cannot imagine losing a child. With time, I hope your friend, you, and all her friends can think more often of the happy times like that in the photo. It is the sort of tragedy that makes one want to throw her arms around the whole group and hold them tight.

So sad. I get the idea, though, that this family knew how to LIVE, not just let the days pass by. That's some small consolation in this time of sorrow. Your friend is lucky to have you -- and you to have her.

I am so sorry to hear about your friends son. So very hard for his wife and kids.

My brother died at the same age of a brain aneurysm and I don't think my mom ever got over it.
