I'm mourning the loss of a very dear, close friend...

Well, really a family member is more appropriate. No more than a couple true "family" members are as close and kind and this companion that I lost last week.

My family wouldn't pick me up when I'm feeling down. Nor would they give me a gentle push and a reminder when I need to pay bills, or get up early for work or even tell me to take out the trash in a kind way!

You'd always make yourself available if I had trouble sleeping. We'd play a game or something. You'd answer the phone for me if I didn't feel like answering and even hang up on telemarketers after telling them off!

Nobody else in my family stood beside me when my shoulders were broken and helped me keep in touch with distant friends. Nor would they help me file my income taxes or even help me fix a computer for someone.

Seldom would complain, never even when the cats would climb all over you and you'd be covered with their fur! You took it all in stride. And actually you'd even suggest to get the litter boxes clean and change the water for the shedders!

You wouldn't even complain that you weren't feeling well. Actually you were doing more and acting more like your old self recently. Such good times we had! I'll miss you so!

Yes, my dear friend, my computer died last week. You had my life in you... almost. My addresses, notes, thoughts, checklists and recently even income taxes!! Yes you were backed up but it's not the same. Especially when the new computer uses Vista and can't read the backup drive....

I guess it's like animals, you should have two around in case something happens to one. Makes it easier to take doesn't it?

Oh well, live and learn. I'll be wearing black for a while. Yes, I'm depressed... :(

Oh, what a sad story......I lost my hard drive recently and that was bad enough.

Cynic, I'm sorry you're sad and I do understand how you feel. ((((Cynic))))

But you're a bad boy, too! LOL I was thinking I should jump in the car and drive to the Cities just so you wouldn't be alone after such a horrendous loss. Then I read the rest of the message.

I can't imagine what I do if my computer died. I need to work on "back ups!"

I take you've gotten a new computer now, since you're posting. Get to know it; speak nicely to it; you'll learn to love it, too.

Of course, my first computer, a 1998 Dell with the first released Windows 98, could compute circles around this prissy thing I use now. I do miss my first computer.

Lordy Lordy, Chicka dee dee dee you brought a tear to my eyes too. Our little dog is 18 years old, losing her sight and quite deaf. But she keeps on going, with a little help from us, when she cannot make it up on the setee or the patio deck stairs, on her own steam. Good Morning, Everyone! Thank you all for the "welcome back". I missed each and every one of you. Stormy here today on this Good Friday. Dark and a bit chilly out. Good weather for gardens though. Glad for the rain though. We've had high temps and high, dry winds this past week and wildfires every day. Nothing close to here, but close enough that I could smell the smoke. My dogs erupted in chorus with every firetruck that passed by over on the highway.(hehehe). I took pictures of the gardens on the 31st. Glad I did, as the hot, dry winds dried out all the pretty yellow Jonquils later that day. Blasted hot winds ruined them before our Easter Sunday family picnic and egg hunt. They were magnificent in chorus with the yellow forsythias, white Bridle's Wreath, and Redbud trees now in full bloom all over the garden. My beloved Jane Magnolia is breathtakingly beautiful this year and smells so wonderful. I planted out some Orange Perfection Phlox yesterday. Tried them last year, but they didn't make it. This rain may ensure these do. I dug around in the bin at the store until I found one, just one package with moist peat inside. Holding it up to to sunlight, I could just make out something possibly alive in that dark green plastic bag. Makes me mad to pay five bucks for dead rootstock. They are not the best looking root stocks I ever saw, but think they will make it. I only need one to survive to establish a nice clump this year for next year's blooms. I also planted a package of purple Liatris and a package of Freesia bulbs for summer blooms. I love the smell of Freesia. Yummy. All the Peonies are up and beginning to make tiny flower buds. Hopefully the red ones and deep magenta ones will bloom this year too. If they do, it will be their first time. Some deer came into the yard this winter and ate the top branches off the one surviving River birch sapling, but it is recovering nicely now. I caged it with a tomato cage and for now they are leaving it alone. They are "camped" up on the hill, hiding in wait for my juicy, delicious roses to start blooming, no doubt. :[ I've been taking the dogs for walks up there every morning and hopefully their pee and poop will make them think twice about coming any closer to the back yard. My English Shepherd could easily take down a whitetail deer. DH said this weekend he would finish stretching field fence around on the inside of the existing barbed wire fencing to keep out critters. That won't keep deer out, but it will keep our dogs in, so we can let them run loose on the property. That will be great. They need the exercise and I need them to do their job protecting the place. They love it, too. Hopefully the raccoons & coyotes will take the hint. Keep Out! Anyhow, so far so good. Gotta go check on my chicks. They poopy up their water really fast and will be ready for breakfast. :) Talk to you guys later. ~Annie

One of our regional grocery chains had quite a bit today so I bought 2 5-lb. bags I'll probably stick in the freezer. Probably have to give Martha White a go, but like Scarlet, I'll think about that tomorrow. The cornmeal I have bought, in the past, where it is freshly milled is a whole 'nother ballgame. I am sorry for you loss and can identify. My best friend of 50 years passed away in 2020. She had lung cancer but as she lived on Vancouver Island and was so immunocomprimised, I wasn't able to visit her at all the year before she died. We talked on the phone and facetimed for as long as she was up for it but she was too weak the last couple of months of her life. When she went into hospice, her daughter set a day up with me to help my friend with Facetime, but sadly she passed the day before that was to happen. I miss her so much and still think "oh - I'll have to tell Susan that..."

That is precisely what I do!

After my first (and LAST) high-$$ Dell died at the age of one, I vowed to never again get emotionally involved with a hunk of parts. It's a machine I use to make a living. Period.

Cynic, you naughty little devil. You had me going for a while. We haven't gotten around to getting a computer after ours died last year. We do have Dotmom's old laptop to hook up to our old monitor, but I have to reorganize the office first. And we just have dial up service at home, what a pain.

Cynic, I understand how you feel and I sympathize with you. Maybe your old friend will see my old friend at electronic recycle bridge. Sadly mine will not see me when I cross over, I have some dear, sweet babies waiting for me at another bridge when the time comes. I'm glad to know my old friend won't be alone.

My new computer with Vista wouldn't read my backup either. I downloaded Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility and it read my backup, so I could have all my old information.

OMG! Do I ever empathize! Been there...done that...and am continually sending prayers up to the computer Gods that I won't have to go through that again for another few years. I now have my entire system "copied" off site on a regular basis to prevent the agony that you're going through trying to copy to Vista.

It's amazing how reliant so many of us get on these things! Yes I have a new one and getting it organized a bit. I haven't buried my old friend yet. I'm going to see if a heart transplant can bring life back. Been wanting a second one anyway. I have plenty of machines around I could get a desktop put together but the notebook is so much more convenient. The worst part is how it happened two days before I needed to head out of town for a picnic. And of course all planning, checklists, etc, were in there! So my memory got tested. But I survived it and had a good time. Used some of the time at the motel to download some of the huge files too. 135mb just for Windows updates. Then of course antivirus, spyware programs, etc.

Thanks all for the kind words. But the reminder for building a "naughty chair" is in the old computer so it'll be a while before that'll happen! ;)

I'm getting some thunder here so I suppose I'd better log off. Don't need the new one to get zapped.

Finding it difficult to find you ... in the dark.

ole joyful ... with a couple of vintage computers here on the desk ... both with white beards

P.S. Do you recommend two wives, as well? (In case one gets her back-up)?
