Nice house! I think you can find something more interesting with regards to the art and rug.

Have you thought of using the blue from the rug on the walls? I have a navy blue dining room (BM Abyss) with dark cherry furniture and love it. Then I would match the draperies to the white woodwork. Then look for a wide stripe fabric (less formal than thin stripes) in the grays & beiges from the rug for the chair seats. No to the art you choose screams dining room & old fashioned

Thanks, I like the idea of the lighter walls such as the gray or light blue. Now I am second guessing the rug..

Here are some possible locations for framed art / prints.

I would lighten the walls to about the light color in the rug. I like the rug you chose, but id try a sisal type rug to play off the cane in the chairs & give it a bit of a continental look.. then id flank the windows with a pattern to bring in your teal colors and put a complimentary pattern on the chair seats. the small side table is ok- just put two matching potted floor plants on each side and one large object on top. definitely a new light fixture though!

I am assuming your mother would also flip if you painted the set? My DD just inherited my mothers set that has similar features to yours. While I am not a big fan of painting nice looking valuable wood, sets like this do look much nicer painted. My mother has said "Not while I'm alive".

I agree the lighted walls may help. The china cabinet looks nice with your items in it.

yes Nicole- its risky to buy off a pix- especially something as unwieldy as a rug. maybe try doing the paint etc., and then decide if you want to change up the rug. its a pretty rug, and a great price

You can surely find a plain sisal rug locally so you can try it. The Costco rug is just too ordinary and expected. You don't have to worry about going too "modern"; it won't happen with that furniture. But you don't have to go stodgy.

Rnmomof2, i will not paint the furniture...my mother would kill me! She is 76 y/o and doesn’t believe in painting nice wood. She always talks about how it is such an expensive solid wood set and how you cannot find caned chairs anymore. The china cabinet contains all of her Waterford and Czech crystal which I love... but all hand wash so would only come out twice a year. My husband originally spotted the rug at Costco. I then made a trip to look at it and thought “it’s ok”. My mother then went and saw it and said “get it - decent price and quality”!

If we kept the current rug anymore ideas for large art for the big wall?

Does the rug needs to be determined first before art and draperies?

I put all the chairs around the table, and it is a bit tight... i Have a 16” leaf I could put in but then would need 8x 11 or 8x12 rug.

I get the no paint rule. And she probably is right about caned chairs being a thing of the past. I like the lighter background rugs.

Is painting out of the question?

It's kinda pricey, but what I wanted was something large and linear. I'll bet you can find one that you like as well that's more affordable.

Do something unexpected with this very traditional furniture. Here's a metallic Klimt from Great Big Canvas.

Update over 1.5 years later!!! The only change so far is the 2 new canvases from Pier One. We still have not used the room at all since not finished. The goal is to get it done by the end of this year or at least have a plan by then.

At minimum, need new chandelier, chairs reupholstered, custom curtains/drapes, and a server/buffet to replace that table with the photos (photos only temporarily there). Unsure what kind to get....as you can see the wood of the table and hutch is dark with little black spots. Will only order from a place where we can see the piece .... such as Ethan Allen, Arhaus, etc or may do something custom from one of the numerous furniture stores in Ohio Amish country...just unsure what to get and whether to try to match the existing pieces or not.

We may also end up painting the walls and really would love to ditch those ugly chairs but want to keep the peace with my mother lol!
