12x24 tiles in kitchen bordered by wood floors

Looking for advice on tile layout. Rectangular kitchen, 12x24 inch tiles, kitchen borders 3 hardwood floors which all match direction running the length of the house. Wood floors are 2 inch width. If we run the kitchen tile the length of the kitchen, similarly to the wood floors, we are afraid the kitchen will look too long. If we run it the width we think it will widen the rectangle. I've read suggestions to run it either way so can't figure out what is best. Any suggestions?

Have you considered running the tile on a diagonal? I think 12x24 tiles set diagonally look great. You could lay some out to test all the choices.

Geez, now I've something else to think about! Still haven't decided what we're doing in the two upstairs bathrooms, but really like lanugget's and kitchenkelly's tiles! (And bonus of large tiles, is that there's less grout!)

When I suggested running it the long way I was considering the best look for the bathroom beyond too. I like a long edge to run into the room. It will make less cuts by the tub too so the edge is tidier. I don't know how wide the hallway is but to me the layout looks very chopped up since there's only one full tile in each course. With the 1/3 offset that an amateur should probably use it will be even choppier. It will be one large format tile next to a sliver of the other. The pic Bill posted is beautiful, but it looks like the hall pattern follows the pattern that was chosen for a larger space. That's why I like the stacked pattern here, running the length of the hall and then continuing into the bathroom.

I‘lol comment on the “quality” aspect a little. My previous house had tile throughout the main living areas and it was laid on the diagonal. Initially when we looked at (&bought) the house we too thought it was different/special/unique/whatever. Friends commented on it looking nice. However, it just really sucked. Rugs and furniture placement always looked bad bc it was hard to get them lined up with the angle or exactly perpendicular to it. It quickly became a PIA. It never just blended away as a floor. I know yours is a bathroom but I would still rethink it. It could easily end up looking like you just couldn’t make a straight line. Maybe use a smaller rectangle tile for herringbone or another interesting layout or find some interesting tile and do a stacked or offset pattern. I think you’d find it nicer and less “unique”. Sometimes unique is the equivalent of bless your heart.

The width of grout lines is determined by the edges of tile. Irregular shapes required wider grout lines due to variability of tiles next to each other. That’s why if you want thin grout lines you need tile with “rectified” edges. These allow for thinest grout lines. If they are “rectified” the tiler will have trouble laying without getting “lippage”. This is where one tile will be slightly higher than next tile. This causes tripping hazard so is to be avoided. Does your floor tile have “rectified” edges?

thanks for the suggestion. DH wont go for it. He loves 90 degree angles LOL!

That’s why you lay out a test pattern so he can “see” what looks better instead of deciding he doesn't like something before he even sees it....I have someone just like him BUT I have 12”x24” tile on a diagonal because it looked best in the space. Good luck!

I'm really liking running them the long way on the short side of the room. Saw a few kitchens like this. It would go against the direction of the wood floor in the family room though. Is this something I should be concerned with?

Attaching picture of 12x24 tile. Note the patten repeated every 3 rows. Going in the same direction of wood floor in other room (long way of kitchen). Note 3rd picture showing hall. If you put the short way of the room look at the cuts. Will you have a lot of cuts those lose the reason for the 12x24 tile. I think if you want see 5 or more or more full tiles per row why do the 12x24
