kitchen tile--brick pattern 12 x 24?

So I was looking for something interesting for my floors and the guy at the tile store suggested using a porcelain 12 x 24 tile and laying it in a brick pattern. I hadn't considered something like this before (didn't really think beyond the typical 12 x 12) but really kinda dug the idea. Has anyone done this or have opinions? Any pictures to share? We've got to move on this fairly quickly because we're completely gutted and I'm thinking that tiling will take place in the next 2 weeks. Thanks!

Hi, I just did this in my kitchen last week. It isn't done yet, but here are a couple of photos to give you an idea. The grout hasn't been sealed yet, it is not as light as in the photos.

That looks great! Your pictures are exactly what I was looking for except the tile we picked is in a lighter shade. It still gives me a clear idea of what ours would look like and I love the look. Thanks so much for posting!

I'd want to do the same type of layout. But I'm kind of rigid like that in my thinking. It might look too close in layout, that the other looks like it was put in by mistake. So the limiting factor is the large format tile, recommended not to do a 50% offset. So I'd do the same with the wall, unless you really deviated from the pattern and did something totally different, like a stacked or herringbone. Again that is my take on it. Maybe others have other ideas and images of examples.

I‘lol comment on the “quality” aspect a little. My previous house had tile throughout the main living areas and it was laid on the diagonal. Initially when we looked at (&bought) the house we too thought it was different/special/unique/whatever. Friends commented on it looking nice. However, it just really sucked. Rugs and furniture placement always looked bad bc it was hard to get them lined up with the angle or exactly perpendicular to it. It quickly became a PIA. It never just blended away as a floor. I know yours is a bathroom but I would still rethink it. It could easily end up looking like you just couldn’t make a straight line. Maybe use a smaller rectangle tile for herringbone or another interesting layout or find some interesting tile and do a stacked or offset pattern. I think you’d find it nicer and less “unique”. Sometimes unique is the equivalent of bless your heart.

Make sure you, or your contractor uses a lippage control kit, sometimes called levelers, so that you have a nice flat floor installation. Since larger tiles have become more popular in recent years, the slight bowing has become an issue. If you install them in a brick pattern (50% offset) you will have lippage. So install them in a 1/3rd offset instead, and use a lippage control kit. Those are my thoughts.

Id make my decision in this order. #1 quality and flatness of tile (this will decide if i stagger/stack. It will also decide how tight of a grout joint i can actually use .) #2 layout for best fit in the given space( accounting for expansion joints/grout joint size) #3 focal points (I.E. am I placing a recess niche in the wall? are there any windows i want balance with etc etc etc. Dont skip #1 #2 and dont force either/other. still make sure you nail #3

Hi desert gal - the tiles are Marazzi. The style is Stone Collection and the color is anthracite. It is a through body porcelain.

Geez, now I've something else to think about! Still haven't decided what we're doing in the two upstairs bathrooms, but really like lanugget's and kitchenkelly's tiles! (And bonus of large tiles, is that there's less grout!)
