Murray, I think you are right.

Right you can hang on to several years worth then donate it. You just can't spend it or reuse it.

I have to say that it worked for me this year and I will for sure be doing it again for next year!

We had ZERO unexpected money this year...but had a whole bunch of unexpected expenses though. :(

Arkansas girl, I wonder if one of the coins you buried last year was counterfeit? I hope this coming year is much better for you.

I tried it, and .....ooops.....spent the change. I also had a penny in the window for good luck on New Years Day. IDK It was a VERY good year for us.

When I read, "After reading the other threat earlier ..." ... I'm inclined to think that I may not be the only one who hits an unintended key at times.

Pennies have been dead for several years in Canada.

If your total purchase (including tax) adds to, say, $4.77 - you pay ("rounded to $4.75") ... if to $4.78 - you pay (" rounded to $4.80").

Some time ago ... maybe still? ... we could/(can?) trade them in for "real money", i.e. usable now.

If I look around, I figure that I could find (at least one) that I could put in a window.

Is/are there any other rule(s) governing procedure?

As I recall.....you put a penny on a windowsill. Just one in a window on New Years Day, preferably just after midnight. For luck/money throughout the year.

I should ad....my husband teased me.....we sold a house....one we didn't like for waaaay more than it should have sold for....the only house we ever sold with a penny in the window.....so he/my husband....ran around the house saying he wanted to put pennies in every window!!! Like a nut! His silly excitement was fun....as he attributed our apparent "luck/money to your household" to my penny in the window......teasing me. You don't have to sell the house to get the "lucky money"....just happened that way for us. :0) Or so it seems.

I Googled the tradition and here is what several people said, also note they do it New Years Eve:

Pennies haven't been used in Canada for a number of years now. Guess what I'm going to do with my Lucky Penny!!! But I can't stay up till midnite, my candle burns out long before that. Just before I go to bed I'll put it in my windowsill.

Yes. The penny just sits there...until your decorating for another Holiday...say...Valentines day or Spring. I put mine heads up, on the quarter of an inch edge next to the glass. I try to use the feng shui principles whenever I can. Never face the penny's face so the money is leaving your house. If the face on the penny points towards the door...find another window.

So it can face into the room, any room. Just not the main door or out the window?

Yes. In Feng Shui, you don't want your luck to leave...... never point a lucky object towards an "exit". And grouping 3 lucky objects together creates unrest=unlucky. One penny is better than say....2 or 3.
