A kindness that made my day/evening

My old beef-farmer stepuncle, in whose home I live, had had three left hip replacements so in his 80s needed a cane to go to do chores. We'd told him to get one of those push-button callers for help, following his wife's death 16 years ago February - some friends were some concerned that if fell in a snowbank he possibly might not be able to get out, so I spent a couple of months with him till his cattle went out to pasture.

Following his death a couple of years later, I helped the executors by going out there most days, sleeping and making the place look lived in, for most of year til the farm was sold and the buyer asked whether I might be interested in renting the house: paying $750. for a 2-bedroom townhouse, unfinished basement, I preferred his offer of a nice farm bungalow at $450. ... so have been here for about 14 years.

I've felt that, since I move about and the push-button systems only work for about 500 feet from the base phone, I needed a cell phone. Son had helped me look, and his phone worked with his carrier who covered limited space near cities and just over a year ago we found what looked like a good deal on a tablet ... but it wouldn't work at my place ... so I've had very limited use of it for the past year.

It works a couple of miles from home, and following some internet activities at the library a few weeks ago I had some yet to do, so at about 8 p.m. pulled into a gravel road beside the paved one, a couple of miles from home. I was using the tablet, with the radio and overhead light on for over a half hour but I think not over 45 min. ... and when I tried to start the car, I got only that "click .. click .. click ..." in rapid succession that's your battery telling you that it lacks the zip to turn over the starter.

Back out on the paved road, in black pants and jacket, my waving so-called "white" hand (but when you look at it you figure that it's somewhat off-colour from really white) failed to get anyone to stop for some time so i started walking on a half-mile trek to a friend's house to get a boost.

A car with three young people stopped, found I needed a boost, they had cables, and I asked whether they had a flashlight, for we had to be sure that we hooked the cables up correctly. They invited me to ride in their back seat with the third person, and when we arrived at my car they gave me a fine flashlight, one with the big square batteries and a half dozen or so LEDs. I said that I had flashlights at home, c,ould put one into the car, but they wanted me to keep it. They couldn't find their cables ... we hooked up the two batteries using my cables, let their engine run to provide charging, waited a minute or two, then tried ... more "click ... click ... click" was the disappointing result.

Waited about 5 min., tried again - same result. Waited about 10 min, tried again - repeat of the same story. I'd wiggled the cable ends on my battery, to try for a better connection ... was reluctant to do it with theirs, which they'd hooked up.

They said that my engine was a 6-cylinder and theirs only a 4, so their engine was not strong enough to make mine start. I didn't argue, but the issue was whether their battery was strong enough, if there was a good connection, and with the little boost that mine could offer, to make the starter turn.

They were en route to an indigenous settlement nearby to buy tax-free cigs, so they called CAA to have them bring emergency service, and left the third young person to stay with me.

Soon a car came slowly along the gravel road, stopped, asked what was wrong, said he could offer a boost, did so, within a few seconds ... the starter worked, the engine started, we thanked him, and he went on his way.

When the other two young people returned, they were surprised that we'd got the engine going, so they called CAA to say that the emergency had been cleared and they need not come. I tried a second time to return their lovely flashlight but they said that I should keep it ... and I thanked them sincerely for their substantial help and their generosity.

When I told son ... he said that I'm always helping people ... so when people offer me help, i should accept it graciously. I said that when I offered to return their flashlight the second time, when they refused, I didn't argue but thanked them sincerely.

What a generous group they were, to spend that amount of time with me, have one stay with me, make cell phone calls., give me a flashlight, etc.

Out of time - will talk later: bye, all.
