My Christmas Day kitchen disaster! (I didn't even swear)

So, I was busy in the kitchen getting everything ready, with not much time to spare. I breaded 3 trays of cauliflower (egg/flour). After finishing the first one, I carried the tray to the fridge to set in there. I opened the fridge and dropped it somehow. It slid down the fridge, some of them landed on me, and the whole mess bounced all over the floor. Before I carried it to the fridge, I had liberally sprinkled extra flour all over it, so I had a real gummy mess.

This mess flew all over the kitchen floor, and the hallway floor which is hardwood. So this gummy stuff was in all the cracks of the hardwood, and in the spaces where the baseboard is.. top and bottom. Flour went everywhere, and the dogs pillow coverings, which were just washed yesterday, got covered in this mess and had to be washed again.

Thankfully, DH was outside washing the car, because that is the kind of thing that he would lose his patience over. I hurried to wash the worst of it, but I couldn't find the pail at first because I haven't washed the floors in years (someone else does it...lol). I finally found it and I kept washing, cleaning all the cracks and changing the water until the dogs no longer had an interest in the floor. That's when I felt it was clean enough :)

DH came in at the tail end and I told him what happened. So I fell far behind, but he brought the second table in, set the table, put the desserts on trays, did the hand wash dishes and unloaded the dishwasher. Everyone is supposed to be here in 20 minutes...WHEW!!

Oh what a mess. Sounds like something I would do. But I did something else--practically caught a pastry on fire in the microwave. Black smoke was pouring out of the micro and made the house smell bad. That sugar really burns!

What a Thanksgiving! dS2 left today to drive back up north to college, dd and boyfriend left Thursday evening to back to their homes and jobs, Auntie left yesterday afternoon, still have MIL and DS1 and his gf. DH and his mom are tending the bonfire, DS and GF are playing tennis and I am taking a break in the library :-). We took MIL who has advancing dementia to local ballet school matinee performance of the Nutcracker today and she LOVED it, much to our surprise and delight! Biggest excitement--- daughter's boyfriend asked DH for our permission to ask her to marry him! We are keeping quiet as he plans to do this in a few weeks and we don't want spoil the surprise! We could not be happier as the young man is exactly who we would order as a SIL and he is truly devoted to our girl. Tired of cooking and serving, that's for sure! Mtn, I realized -- finally-- that I used a 9.5" springform pan instead of a 9" or 8", which is why it looked so flat. It was still delicious, though, and the apple pie from our local Methodist youth group was fantastic! And do you know, I am sending people home with their gingerbread house kits. We were having such a good time talking and visiting that the afternoon sped by with no need for a planned indoor activity! We will save ours for Christmas Eve when my nephews are staying over. Chibimimi, you are a veritable pioneer! I cannot imagine cooking over an open fire and really admire you for not giving in and running to the nearest restaurant. Bbstx, wine was definitely involved! We had a Viognier and a Beaujolais for our turkey dinner, and shooters of hot wassail spiked with spiced rum in mini christmas mugs. Let's just say it was pretty cheerful oPattyxlynn, what a great idea for a dessert/snack---- caramelized apple chips----and I'll bet your apple cinnamon loaves were delicious! I am often dubious of the photos I see on Pinterest.......they look like the product of a craft room staff, not a single harried individual with a pair of scissors and a roll of ribbon. I found this on the discussion thread about holiday decorating Posted by roarah I store my ornaments in Christmas decorative boxes and when they are emptied, after ornaments are on the tree, I put them around the skirt like presents:) Super easy and when it is time to take the ornaments down again all the storage boxes are right there for me! And from tobyt on the cooking forum I think it came from the Cake Central website. When you are making cut out cookies that require you to refrigerate the dough before rolling it out, roll the dough out between two pieces of parchment or wax paper before you put it in the fridge. The soft dough rolls much easier and never cracks. Once you have your sheets of dough rolled out, stack them on a cookie sheet and refrigerate until they are firmed up. I took it one step further, and had my husband cut me strips of wood about 18" long, 1" wide and 1/4" thick. He also made me a set in 1/8" thickness. I lay these on either side of the dough and run the rolling pin over them, giving me perfectly consistent thickness. terriks, That's a great link with so many clever ideas. Now if only I could remember to do those things.

Tame, That's wild! I'm guessing that although your husband refuses to go for 'family counseling' you are probably the one who has the most responsibility for this child as far as parenting goes. You need to give your husband an ultimatum, either he goes to family couseling with you or the child goes back to her mother or into a foster home. You should not have to parent this child without help. If it was me I'd put him AND his daughter out the door! Good Luck!

How have my habits changed? I now bake which I never did before. Before renos my counter measured 2X2 and everything happened in that space. Cooking was a challenge and baking was impossible. The other counter had the microwave on it and the largest counter space was outside the work triangle and so was nothing but a dumping ground. When we redid our kitchen it was all about getting as much counter space as possible. My prep counter for cooking is now 4 1/2" long with a prep sink that anchors it and I am a clean as I go cook. When you've spent 25 years with a counter as small as mine was you have no choice but to become a clean-as-you-go cook and that habit has stuck with me. My baking counter is 7' long and I use every inch of it. Turns out I am a very, very messy baker and so my baking counter is right above the DW and right next to the clean-up sink.

I wonder if this is a Susan thing. I broke my favorite cup last night. My DGD gave it to me a couple of years ago. It's very large, and has a great handle to grip, and I love it. I set it down on the post on the stairs, and told myself to be careful not to bump into it. Then I got my coat out of another room, got close to the cup, turned around, and the coat sent it flying down the stairs. Not only did tea spill all over the floor, but I could hear the cup smash on every step. I was very sad!

Well, at least neither of us had a car accident. Knock wood.

Well, I broke both the coffee carafe and the French press coffeemaker this week. I wondered what the 3rd thing would be. Maybe you did it for me, Alisande. Sorry about the cup; I know how that is. Maybe DGD can get you another one? When's your b-day?

Oh, I'm glad I didn't do anything that would cause a stinky house... I hate that.

Susan, sorry about the cup. I know how much that would bother me. DH broke a pepper shaker that had sentimental value to me, years ago, and it bothered me a lot.

sounds like we all have a case of the clumsies..
If misery loves company...

I haven't dropped anything ,,yet,, but did a dumb thing this afternoon.
A couple of weeks ago I bought some really nice, super sharp knives. I've been washing drying them with care. Well today I asked my son who is home from college to wash up a few dishes for us. He did and left them to dry in the sink drainer including the knives facing point end UP. I went to grab a microwave pot, not even thinking a knife would be pointing up, and slammed the bottom joint of my thumb on a new knife. Oh, that woke me up. Everyone came running to the kitchen, where I could give the 'don't leave the knives up speech.

DH spilled both the gravy and the steak sauce on my Spode Christmas tablecloth. I hope-hope-hope I can get the stains out. At least nothing broke today.

This lady has ... some ... cool!!

Busy getting things ready ... with not much time to spare ... has a real spill ... that makes not just a plain=-run-of-the-mill mess ...

... but a really gooey one ... spread over a wide area ... with complications (which requires help fom the dogs to get cleaned up) ....

And, with company due soon, comes to write an extended story to her cyber friends about the whole mess - ending up saying that the company is due in 20 min. or so: that's equanimity for you!

This gal operates with appreciable cool!

Of course ... she's a social worker.
