Siding questions for 1870's farmhouse. WWYD?
Comments (18)Sarah, Have you considered doing it one or two sides at a time? That way perhaps you could afford having it replaced with wood. Although you said you didn't want to DIY on a repaint, I would reconsider that, too. You guys are intrepid and I assume you already know how to paint, right? LOL! Since a repaint now (as a holding action while you save up for a removal and replace with wood) would not have the huge, worrying issues of lead paint, then repainting is just basically standing up there and having at it. Is it the ladder work that's stalling you? Then I would consider buying some scaffolding to make it easier, and feel safer while you're doing it. After you've done with the paint job, you could resell the scaffolding, though I predict you'll find it handy to have and want to keep it. There's still some ladders involved even when working with scaffolding, but it does make it much easier to work on. Your house is the same height as mine and I can assure you it looks far scarier from the ground than when working up on good (at least Type II) ladder equipped with a stand-off bracket. I started work on the slate roofs of my house last fall and even though I feel pretty comfy on ladders (being a former volunteer firefighter), roof work required some getting used to. But it's surprising how quickly I adjusted. One thing, though, I find moving and raising ladders sturdy enough for all-day work and long enough to reach gable peaks, requires two people. In a pinch I can do it by myself, but it's by far the hardest thing of the day's work, and always dicey as it's at the extreme edge of my strength. Comments (57)Thank you, Radar. I really don't know what he thinks of it, but I do wonder that, too. If he's talked to DH about it, I know my husband did not mention to him that Sue came on to him, as well. Perhaps, after they got back together, they were hoping that we would call and arrange to do something together again. When we didn't, because (1) I was very angry still at Sue for trying to have an affair or whatever with my husband and (2) because we were both very upset and, yes, angry at how Sue helped destroy our mutual friends' marriage they most likely thought that it was because of the latter reason. Thankfully, though, it hasn't ruined DH and Jim's longtime golf games together. But, from what I've been told, the talk during golf and after in the clubhouse is pretty much just about everything golf related....See MoreA tipping question, WWYD?
Comments (28)I think the original question was based on having something done that the OP didn't know you were getting? My reading was that you expected to pay $95 for each service but suddenly got a $40 additional charge (and those prices do seem steep but guess its a function of where you go). I think I'd certainly have been irritated; I do not like getting charged for services when I don't know they are being done/billed ahead of time. I've actually had a problem the last 2 times I took my MIL in to get her hair cut. She's got dementia and can't really wash her own hair very well so it's a good way to get it professionally cleaned up too. I take her to a Hair Cuttery which is a chain with the prices posted. Twice now she has had her hair washed, cut and blow dried which according to the posted price should be $28. And twice they have added a $13 charge for additional blow drying. The first time I argued with the cashier/manager but she wouldn't budge. Second time same thing happened! I got the manager to lower the price, but then the hairdresser looked so stricken (and I confirmed the additional money would have gone to her) so I allowed them to charge the higher amount. MIL will wander if she gets bored and I just can't wrangle too long. Still it really annoys me. This place is so convenient to the ALF but I do need to decide if I'll go back. And oh how I wish the stubborn old....dear....would just use the damn in-house ALF beauty salon which charges $20 flat but that's not happening LOL. PS I had to look up hair glaze too, have never heard of that before....See MoreEtiquette question—-WWYD?
Comments (23)We have done renovations before and people ask the cost. I tell them if they're interested I'll give them the name of the contractor and then left it to them to follow up. So, when you're thanking for the dinner, just mention that you liked the screen porch renovations and thank-you for the name of the contractor and leave it. Right now, a lot of us are doing major landscaping jobs, us included and we are all sharing contractors and costs. All of our jobs are different with different constraints and problems and we have no problems sharing information....See MoreSammy
