Is range & hood next to window awful?
Comments (22)Wow, you all are AWESOME!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond with your perspectives and photos. amysrq said: function was more important to me in this case. I am more of a function gal myself when it comes to my kitchen. I am the chief cook, and in wanting the range next to the window, it's so I can enjoy the view out the window while I'm stirring. And chop in front of the window, like fori said. And because I'm less attuned to imagining interior design types of things in my head, I almost always have to see it before I can see if it would bother me looking at it day after day. ofealia said Maybe what your KD is talking about is how it will look from the side - you'll see the side of the rangehood, (which really aren't always "finished" on the sides) underneath the side of the cabinet. Yeah, I think that you are right that is what he is worried about. Your suggestion is a good one, and with all of the photo examples here, there seem to be tons of options for how to treat the space and look finished. tiskers said I can see why a homeowner could have a lot of ANGST over something like that (I know I would have, too!) - but all those photos above look BEAUTIFUL to me! They look beautiful to me too! Yeah, I got angsty about it because when I asked the designer to try putting the range in that spot because I wanted to see out the window while I was cooking, he launched into his opinion about the hood. And I wasn't expecting *that* reaction. igloochic: thanks so much for posting your photos, because that area of your kitchen matches how mine would be: the corner windows at one end, and the range on that wall with the window on the right side. The difference I have is that I have a wall to the left of the range where you have the doorway and fridge. (It's the wall that my fridge and range currently share. Today, my range is too close to the fridge, imo, and my back will be to the nice view out the window.) I get what you mean about the visual weight and aiming for balance over the whole room, and not just in one part of the room. And after reading your post, I think that that's the key aspect that I need to keep in mind and raise with the designer (Pinot or no Pinot :-) rosie, you are absolutely right! (When you meet with your designer, why don't you ask what can be done to make it work or work even better visually?) I'm hoping that he comes back with some range treatment ideas (say like lisadelrio's airy-looking one or ofealia's suggestion). It's going to prove whether he's got the "know how". :-) I'll post the layout when I get it done in the software program. Maybe in a new thread, so that I can get comments on other aspects of the room at the same time. Thanks again everyone!...See MoreWhat kind of range hood with high ceilings?
Comments (16)Hi Greg, That's the conclusion I was coming to a well, since I need the ducting on the kitchen side of the wall. (The other side will be a bedroom, probably the guest room.) I drew the thing four different ways in SketchUp and did 2d images of them.... Chimney hood. I think this one is my favorite because I'm going for a contemporary look: Hood under stacked cabinets like my architect suggested. Overwhelming, but maybe OK if I were going for a more traditional look. A lighter color on the 2nd row might make it a it better, but I couldn't find an easy way to draw that. Lowering the ceiling by a foot might help too, by making the 2nd row shorter. A chase / soffit like tubeman has. I think this one is a close second place visually. I wonder if this would be quieter since the ducting would be less exposed. Just for the heck of it, a hood inside a wooden enclosure. This looks nicer than I thought it would, and it might be nice in a more traditional / transitional design. It's probably not quite right for me, but I need to think about it and go find some real life pictures of this sort of design. Thanks for all the advice! BTW, for anyone wanting to play with SketchUp, the 3d warehouse has some "SketchData" frameless cabinet components that make this sort of thing pretty easy to create. There are even some YouTube videos explaining how to use them. Laura...See MoreRange & hood in front of window - great idea, or terrible idea?
Comments (19)You guys didn't scare me away, LOL! All very good advice, and definitely a lot of solid arguments I can bring to the designer and MSO and convince them to drop this idea. It's starting to sound like the sink & prep area should be in front of the window, and the range should be either on the side wall, or on a center island that would need to be built (yay, another thread topic). palimpsest, that's actually exactly what the folks on Houzz suggested - hang an island hood in front of it. Pic attached. northcarolina and cstr, I agree 100%, just wanted to get a 2nd opinion. livewireoak and glitterandguns, good points about the time spent on various activities - also something to bring up as a counter-argument. marcolo, that was pretty damn hilarious, thank you! :) :) :) remodelfla and kitchendetective, that was some pretty impressive "detective work"! I like the concept, but unfortunately there's just not enough space to set up something like that, and anyway, it looks like we'll be scrapping the whole range-in-front-of-window idea altogether. Problem solved, it seems. Thanks a lot, everyone, for your VERY useful commentary!...See MoreWould this open shelf look OK between the wall oven and range hood?
Comments (35)Thank you all for weighing in on this decision. I read each and every comment and you gave me a lot to think about! We ended up going to Bargain Outlet tonight to order different countertop. The Soapstone Sequoia tops that we bought ended up not being long enough (Big oops) and they won't work in the final layout that we settled on. When we changed from a range to a cooktop, we could no longer do the cut for the range, and it threw our measurements off. Somehow we missed that little detail until today until we set the counter on the cabinets and realized it was 6" short. : P (Must have been DIY dilirium.) But...we think it might have worked out for the best. We had bought the counters months ago when a local store was going out of business, and then more recently we got the cabinets. Seeing them together showed us that while they could work, they weren't a super match for each other. When we picked up the cabinets, they came with a few small sections of Bella Noche laminate, and they looked great together. Since we were going to have to order counter anyway, we switched directions and ordered Bella Noche instead. We never would have picked it from the little sample cards, but seeing the remnants with our cabinets helped us to know that we'd like it. While we were at Bargain Outlet, we ordered a 30" wide x 18" tall wall cabinet to place under the short wall cabinet in our layout. Our plan is to leave the doors off of it so that I can have a little bit of open shelving, but it will be boxed in along the side of the range hood like many of you suggested. Playing around with the shelf last night made me realize I could have a lot of fun with an open area there to decorate. We also ordered a glass door for the corner upper to help it feel airier over there om the sea of uppers, and it will give us another spot for displaying pretty serving bowls, too. Colors for the oven cabinet, hood and island remain to be determined. I don't really want to paint all of the uppers at this point. We have a busy family that the factory finish will probably handle better than a home paint job. Maybe someday, though! Now I have to see what colors look nice with both the cabinets and the new laminate. Should I keep it simple and do black? (Our fridge is black... and the cabinet doors have black lines along the details of the trim.) There are flecks of dark blue in this laminate too, although it's hard to see in the sample online.
