Comments (45)I read an article on this site not long ago (can't remember where now) that I thought gave some good advice. Buy a couple of high quality pieces. Really nice sofa and chair for example in a neutral color. Then accessorize and add color with less expensive pillows and smaller more original pieces from flea markets as others have suggested or even second hand stores. If you spend some time browsing photos on Houzz and start an idea book you will soon see the similarities in what you like or don't like. Even colors you gravitate towards. So you could get some nice pieces and ideas from Ethan Allen but don't buy everything from them. Fill in with less expensive and unique pieces. It will keep the room from looking like a showroom. Also once you pick fabrics or pillows you like paint stores (at least my local SW) is great about helping pick out paint colors. I think you could very well pull a room together based on an inspiration photo and help from furniture and paint stores. I am no whiz at decorating but I have learned a lot from reading these forums. Good luck and have some fun with it :)...See MoreHELP!!! New home: Need so much new stuff and area rug help!
Comments (22)Home Interiors & Jodie White, Sorry guys. I'm new to this. Obviously, i need to create an Ideabook! I tend to go more towards muted brown, red, yellow/gold, rust colors (in past), but open to other somewhat neutral palettes. I actually love the console, but was considering an antique cream color (if I could make that work?). My tastes tend to be traditional, rustic, a little farmhouse (pottery barn, restoration hardware, ballard designs) but with so many current needs, all those in a TIGHT budget! Aktillery9, i do like all of those looks. My husband did just tell me, due to wiring, there is chance we may not be able to mount on flat wall as i hoped, so i may be forced to go back to corner console again. :( When I get a chance, I'll post some of my fav looks....See MoreNeed help beach-ifying vacation house kitchen! Please help!
Comments (13)the good thing is when your house is at the beach, you don't need to try so hard. you don't need signs like 'this way to the beach' or 'manatee crossing'. you dont need lamps shaped like anchors. all of those items are for people whose houses are NOT at the beach. i recommend under decorating. under beachifying. nothing fussy, everything easy care. don't worry about your kitchen right now... stock up on olive oil and fresh veg, a good knife or two, make a great grill space outside. thats the good news. the bad news is even if you bought the place full cash and you have no mortgage, a second home is expensive. doubling all your utilities, your taxes, your trash pick up, etc etc etc. you'll be amazed how much it costs when you have to paint twice as often, replace roofs twice as often, its endless. don't spend a penny on your perfectly nice kitchen that you don't need to spend because it isnt quite the right color at this time. when things need to be painted, soon enough. anyway, thats more advice than you asked for, but there it is. enjoy your house near the beach. we've had ours for 18 years now and havent regretted a moment....See MoreBeach house needs new window treatments please!!
Comments (26)Time to start from scratch. Not one of those window coverings is worth working around. I think you need a MUCH simpler solution that unifies all the spaces, but since light control is your top concern, a two-pronged approach might work best, e.g.: light-to-medium-weight fabric panels, perhaps layered over woven shades, on the inside awnings (or maybe even Bermuda shutters) on the outside Another unobtrusive, “invisible“ way to handle the heat and glare would be to have a U.V.-blocking film like VistaTint applied to the windows....See MoreFlo Mangan
