He (weatherman) forgot to stick his head out the door!

We got rain, snow, sleet. So now for the most part I have a slushy mess that is supposed to freeze over tonight. Started on my Christmas cookies.

Yesterday one weather model was saying a few tenth's on an inch another model was saying 1"-3" here in Central Virginia. We passed 3" a couple of inches ago, and at the moment it is snowing hard enough that I cannot see the pond from the house.

I think we're screwed.

No snow here, of course, but it's pretty chilly out, for us. 55 degrees.

We were on the line between "a dusting" and "heaps". We got about 3" overnight, but it's been raining since mid morning. Everything is pure slush. It's supposed to stay above freezing until about 6:00 AM, when we have a chance of adding to the accumulation. Morning drive time should be just lovely.

In the middle of this cold rain/sleet mix, we had to go to a rental and cut up a tree. It fell directly in front of the tenant's porch (and hit his motorcycle), and he couldn't get out without crawling through the branches. The snow is so heavy!! The tall tree-shrubs were bent all the way to the ground. I shook the snow off, and it looks like they'll snap back.

I'm making meat loaf and mashed potatoes for supper. It's a day for warm, squishy food!

First snow was supposed to be a less than 1/4 inch was over an inch. While I know what we received the other day was our 7th I do not remember which one it was that was the one that dumped 6-7 inches. Underneath the snow was the slush shown in Iris's post which actually helped melt/dissolve the snow down to a two inch layer on the driveway I could shovel. Seldom have this many measurable snows this early.

Local weather team got this one right -- about 2", starting late morning and ending by dinner time. That's plenty for now!

It's cold here in Colorado, but no snow to go with it. If it's going to be 11 degrees....I want snow! :0)

If you're in an area where snow is not unheard of during winter months, I'm sure it's not the first time it's happened that you were not supposed to get any snow but did.

I'll mail you some of ours nicole. Of course I probably can't get out to get to the post office.

A difference this year in areas that may only receive one snow a year is that is that the snow is much earlier than normal. Does not normally happen until January or February if it happens.

We were supposed to get an inch of snow, we got none. Rained the entire time. Son ended up getting about 6 or 8 inches, near the Virginia border.

No snow here in Central KY, but the bitter cold is not fun.

Our officially reported total is 10.5"

Our weather "guessers" said we would get anywhere from 4 to 8" and ice.

We got nothing.

But most people are stocked up on bread, milk & toilet paper.

Wow, Bob....I think we had 5 or 6" but the rain has washed some of it away. It was suppose to be up in the 40's today but didn't reach those temps until after the snow. Hence, the accumulation not expected. It should all be gone in a day or two. It did look pretty and got me in some Christmas spirit. I was just feeling bad for our bridge hostess for tomorrow morning. It happens to be a group that serves lunch for 12 after the game. All that prep and one doesn't know if it will be possible to have it until we see what the morning brings.

One of the most overpaid jobs, weather people. No matter how wrong they get it... they get paid. My opinion.

Lily and Kathy.....it was quite beautiful. Temps going up in mid 40's. By the end of the week I expect it will all be gone. That's what I love about living here! :-)))

Since we have a verrrrrrry long driveway we finally had to bite the bullet and buy a plow blade for our tractor yesterday. It took a little bit to get the hang of it, especially on the gravel portion of thr driveway around the barn.

When my wife was plowing the long, narrow straight section heading out toward the road, she got a little too close to the edge, and went slightly off the driveway at a spot where it drops off sharply. She tried to maneuver back onto the driveway, but it just kept slipping further and further. I then tried to help with a chain attached to the truck, but the truck was only spinning on the ice and snow, and the tractor slipped further. I don't think it is (yet) in danger of rolling over, since it has a very low center of gravity, and is rated as "safe" on slopes up to 30 degrees, but I think we may need a towtruck to pull it back up.

Drat! I hope that it will thaw (it's supposed to be up to 50s today and you're a day behind us, so soon!) and you'll have no problems.

Counting on it, Rob...........DH has to have a pacemaker inserted in Jan. after which he needs a knee replacement. Cardiologist doesn't want him having the knee surgery until after the he gets pacemaker so had to put that surgery on hold. That left the very long, steep driveway to me. By yesterday it was mostly slush and I wanted to get it off before last nights freeze. Just shoveled two paths for SUV tires to make it up driveway. Am counting on God to do the rest. :-)))

Bob, hope you get pulled out before next snowfall!

Oh Georgysmom, I hate to think of you (I picture you as a tiny lady,) shoveling a steep driveway. Is there a kid or service you could hire in the future while your dh is laid up? I wish him well!

It warmed up somewhat yesterday, enough that we were half thinking of delaying the snowplow purchase. Then over night it got very cold, and the partially melted slush froze rock hard -- so much so that the tires of my car were frozen to the ground and, at first the car wouldn't move, even though it is an AWD Subaru. After turning the wheel enough to break the front wheels free I was able to get the car free.

With how things have been going for me lately, I half-expected to see four patches of tire still stuck to the ground after I backed up, and get out to see the car sitting on its rims with four flats.

I've probably stated here before how I loved the time I went to Williamsburg for Christmas. There was no snow of course, but now - wouldn't it be absolutely wonderful? I'd love to see current photos with the town decorated for Christmas amid the snow. I remember the fireworks too.

That's scary, bob. My hubby plows our very long dirt road with a backhoe and I always breath a sigh of relief when he returns unscathed. Hope you guys are able to get the tractor out with no further problems.

Dawn, where in CA do you live that you need to plow snow?? That doesn't seem like it would be a frequent need.....unless you live up in the mountains :-)

I live too close to the water to get much snow but we can on occasion. I remember a Thanksgiving a few years back that we received an unexpected and very heavy (for us) snowfall - a foot or more. And with very cold temps that delayed melting. Coming home in my old pickup from a pre-T'day shopping trip, I managed to make it all the way back safely, dodging spin-outs along the way and assorted abandoned cars, only to slide off my long gravel driveway into a low spot. Even with 4 wheel drive, I could not get that thing to budge!! Too much of an angle. That did require the assistance of a tow truck to get out.......thank you, AAA!!!

Sjerin, I wish I was tiny..........not at all. Good old German stock. Bob, that's why I got out there and shoveled two tire tracks up the driveway. We were afraid of the freezing overnight. It's melting quite nicely now. My driveway is pretty long, longer than the average around here, but not as long as yours. However, it is very steep. I had to be very careful not to fall on the icy patches while shoveling.

Forgot to mention that we called several people to have it shoveled but they had no availability yesterday. One called back today to see if we were able to get it taken care of. He felt very bad about my having to do it. :-)))

gardengal, we do live in the mountains. Our snowiest time is from around the end of December to mid March, although there have been hammered by snow in November or as late as April. The old timers tell of a year that it snowed in July, but that was before our time.

Bob word of caution check the tire pressure as you may have a slow leak develop where the pressure of moving the tires back and forth to free them from the ice may have released some of the air or moved the tire slightly enough to move it away from the rim. Will be fine if you have full pressure but tires have less pressure when it is cold so the pressure holding tire and rim together may not be at the optimal level. Just check the pressure several times for about a week.

Something I have seen when parking on ice is where ice surrounding the tire melts and that which is directly under the tire does not. Husband's van slid down the driveway when I shut the front door of the house. What I call the emergency brake was set and the tires did not spin as I watched it slide. It hit a crack and the pieces of ice released from the back tires and it stopped sliding. We had wondered how we had found it at the bottom of the driveway the previous winter. Never had it happen again but we parked at an angle so it would go into the lawn not the street.

I managed to finally find my 4000 lb manual ratchet comealong, and using a lengthy steel cable and a couple of hefty tow chains attached to a tree on the other side of the driveway slowly, inexorably inched the tractor forward. At first though the angle was too shallow, and as it moved forward it also slid sideways a little. We were about to give up and actually called a tow truck. While we were waiting for them to call back saying when the truck would arrive, we tried using a different tree more directly across the driveway, and after about fifteen minutes it seemed clear that it was going to work, and since the tow truck company hadn't yet called to say a truck was being dispatched, we called them and cancelled it. It took about another 20 minutes to get it the rest of the way up.

Hooray! Glad you got the tractor up and running again, Bob and didn't need a tow service.

Good the tractor is up. Now depending on how much snow you get and if the ground is somewhat soft under it go to some place and either find reflectors on poles or the orange metal posts you drive into the ground to put in the area that the tractor slid off of. The reflectors may be easier but they also tend to bend slightly when pushed to the side.

The boy is home. Not a flake going east until I 40 splits Kingston and Asheville. Thirty miles up 81 it began. Deeper and deeper until I hit twenty miles outside of Johnson City. Then, it began to need plows, dumping kind of snow. I could only imagine what was even further east?! Wow

We've been under a "Severe Winter Weather Advisory" for two days! Nothing, nada, zilch. Been getting some light rain on and off.

natesg................for everyone but me. Most of my friends have short, flat driveways. I was going to have someone pick me up but when I thought about it, it was not a great idea. My driveway was more dangerous to try and walk up than drive up. One of the regulars was not scheduled to play because she was expecting company. I guess the weather changed that, so she was able to go in my place. All's well that ends well. I got to my luncheon yesterday and have another one today so everything is back to normal.

All fall the weather experts were predicting an extremely cold winter with more snow than normal. Hmmph. We got a good dumping in November, then little after that. Temps are around freezing, with above freezing temps and rain over the weekend.

I guess it'll be a green Christmas this year.

I love cold, sunny days with snow. The roads are dry, the air is crisp with no drizzle, freezing rain and overcast days.

Yay Bob! That looks like a chore....but a job well done!

I'm going out to shovel, we have a NEW 2"-3" on the driveway.
