What is going on with the house next door?

The house next door to mine is an odd duck. I live in a relatively new neighborhood, established about 10 years ago.

This house has been a rental since we moved in 4 years ago. It seems I meet a tenant, and they move out pretty quickly. I don't think anyone has been in it for months now. It is for sale on realtor.com and other sites, but there is no sign in the yard. Houses in this neighborhood sell in days. I don't understand why there isn't a sign in the yard or why this house hasn't sold yet (although it does seem to be slightly overpriced.)

This house annoys my husband so much because they have yet to put in a sidewalk. There are sidewalks everywhere else in the neighborhood, but not at this house that has been there for years. The village tells us they have trouble contacting the owner.

Is it haunted? Cursed? Owned by a specter? A ruse? What gives? Why isn't there a sign in the yard if they are selling?

THIS is one explanation to why there is no For Sale sign. Hope the link helps. Basically, says that people rarely buy a house because they saw a sign in the yard. Buyers now find properties by searching the Internet or by being updated as to what is available by their realtor.

And a sign draws attention to the fact that the house may be vacant.

Just as pitifull as the day I bought it!! Though I've got it ear-marked for de-construction in april,, Man!!! that thing is really creakin' in this 45 knot wind!! But,, did get the retaining wall removed, (a nine footer) and have begun to replace it with 2 5 foot terraces,, much better and more planting room. The next big job is the garage,,, a real boy's club complete with a place to change oil without crawling in the gravel and a couple of beer taps for the home-brew, a solar cooling unit, trans-somes for heat escape, and a 10,000 gal water re-claimation system for starters.. That oughta keep me busy for at least a year. The tool storage is up to the huby mon. Pictures?? If I could figure out how to gift you with such a thing ,, I will do it, but dog-gone it,, I'll try, give me a moment. darlene

The pittopsorum is a good choice - very fast growing and quite airy. It is used frequently in SoCal as a privacy screen. I would not put too much stock in reports of sudden die off. I've never encountered it, except here in the PNW where the odd bad winter (like the one just past) will freeze it off. I've used it a number of times in designs in coastal Orange county and have not had a problem with it but it may take a little more attention in hotter, interior locations. And I'd question the allergic reaction to just touching the plant. It can raise some allergy concerns with pollen and it is toxic if ingested (and a great many other plants are as well.....that's why humans tend not to graze their gardens!), but according to the UCDavis toxic plants listing, it is NOT known to produce dermatological reactions. Podocarpus is a common evergreen screening plant as well. Can be sheared and hedged at will but rather slow growing compared to the pitt. Clumping bamboo is another possibility. Any of the Fargesia species should rapidly achieve a good screening height.

Is that house in SC? Looks like one that is on the Sullivan's Island. There used to be another house on Sullivan's that we called the Cheese House. I am not sure if they tore it down, or if it was destroyed by one of the hurricane's. But one very similar to your interest was built there. Not sure if it was the exact location of the Cheese House. We saw it last fall when vacationing at Wild Dunes.

The airport has an ILS on one runway. That means instrument flying. This place won't shut down. Jet operations are very loud and this airport can accommodate a jet. Helicopter's are just as bad. Looking at the aerial picture, you've got a lot of hangars. This is an often used airport. Plus, pilots will be using the field for touch and go's all weekend, every weekend. We have a local municipal airport that over flies the historic downtown. It wasn't so bad, but then somebody got the bright idea to start a flying school. What was once a sleepy little flying club has turned into the second busiest airport in Georgia with Atlanta Hartsfield being first. Add the one local guy with a jet and the life flight helicopters that are stationed out of it that operate all hours of the day and night, you've got a monster. We moved. Great house if you have a hearing disability.

I agree that was a fabulous read. You ought to post it as its own thread, I think a lot of people would enjoy reading that and it's sort-of buried in here.

Back to the OP, could they be renting to students/visiting faculty? That could explain people moving frequently. But as to why it's not selling? Must be something inside? Or that odd "crop circle" mark in the back lawn?

One of the tenants was a student, but I'm not sure about the others. It is plausible, because it is never advertised as for rent either. Perhaps it is only available to certain populations.

The "realtor" listed on Realtor.com is a construction company. And not one I have heard of, nor does it service our area, but rural communities about 30 miles west. Maybe this house was an experiment for them that didn't turn out for them.

We used to live in Neenah, and I'm amazed how affordable the housing still is. 1/3 acre for less than 300K, wow!

And jrb451, that is a really intriguing and interesting story. I agree, you should put it in another separate post.

rich69b, housing has stayed affordable in the Fox Valley. I actually think this house is priced too high!

Still no sign, still no offer per Realtor.com. I never see anyone looking at this house, although one three houses up the street sold in a day in the last few weeks.
