carding mill, pat austin or alnwick
Comments (15)Pat Austin will do fine in your area. It's more heat tolerant than many other Austins. Teasing Georgia is great too, if you want a softer orange-yellow. I don't think heat is a problem for Austins as the Austin US nursery is in Tyler, Tx, a zone 8a area with high humidity in the summer.I live in an area with 90+ weather for 8 months out of year and 80+ percent humidity in the summer. All of the Austins, I've tried grow here, some have more disease problems than others....See MoreAbraham Darby or A Shropshire Lad?
Comments (78)Thanks Suzanne! Bee balm would be great. I totally forgot about Bee Balm. I'm trying to get more plant for bees, butterflies, etc. I probably wont put in another rose into this bed unless it is short. I think I have enough tall ones and there is maybe 1 space that I could squeeze a short rose into the front on the left. I will have to see if all the other ones I put in make it okay lol. Does LD Braithwaite stay small in warm zones? Thanks to Lisa's enabling photos of PCdM, I have two in the ground and another in a pot! With the 3 Abe Darbys I will be full of peachy apricot sherberty goodness all summer long lol! I totally envy everyone that can griw poppies. I haven't had much luck here with them. I can get them started but they pout when they get in the garden. Perhaps the humidity.. My Crown Princess Margareta improves every year. She definitely takes her time. I almost tossed her the first year. Ugly fugly blooms like the grossest washed out orange yellow ever. Barely double and tiny. I have 2 and they both looked the same way. The next year they were much bigger and better. Last year they actually looked half decent. I think she likes colder winters than I have. She likes to be pruned hard in early spring. She grows like a big climber here. One is climbing my fig tree. The other is espalier near the fig tree. She is full of buds right now so hopefully they will be nice! Comments (13)I'm afraid I don't know the PH, but it is city water that goes through reverse osmosis. I think it's on the alkaline side. Does that make a difference? Both of these roses are grafted on Dr. Huey. Lisa...See MoreAbraham Darby vs Colette for climbing
Comments (28)Diane, thank you so very much for your guidance and advice. The Colette I ordered is grafted on Dr. Huey. I am in zone 8b about 40 miles from Portland, OR. My garden gets full sun, all day. The arbor I am going to order is not here yet, it's one I am looking at on Etsy, a company called A Rustic Garden. Their arbors look very sturdy and hefty and well worth the $$, unlike some of the spindly little arbors one sees offered through so many online garden supplies. My very favorite place for quality obelisks and arbors and all things garden is GardenArtisans.com. They are fabulous but so $$$$$ that I own only one of their gorgeous items, an obelisk that I treasure. As far as Colette, I am so looking forward to her, just hope she is as thrilled with her new home here as I am to welcome her. I also snagged an Augusta Luise from Palatine that I am thrilled about as well as Lavender Crush and Twilight Zone from Regan. You are my inspiration! Happy New Year to you and your family and everyone else here, having like-minded rose lovers to converse with is such a delight! I'm holding my breath until spring (hurry up, spring!) hoping that all my roses came through OK. We had an ice storm that covered everything in a 2" coat of ice unlike anything I have ever seen before. In all directions, it was like looking at a mirror, just a sheet of glass reflecting everything around. I will find out which roses are hardy here! It does get hot here in summer, especially in the sun trap that is my rose garden....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
