Best commercial brands of turkeys in stores?

I can make a great rare roast beef, but for the last 5 years plus, turkey hates me.

For at least 8 years I’ve bought fresh turkeys at Trader Joe’s. 3 years ago we got a new oven a week before Thanksgiving. The turkey was awful. I’ve blocked some of the awful memories, but I think it was half raw and half overcooked. WITH a thermometer.

2 years ago it was still bad, and I’d bought a Chef Alarm. I’d even made a practice turkey the week before. On the big day, the alarm went off over an hour ahead of schedule, and we scrambled to get everything ready. I stuck that poor turkey all over with an instant read thermometer to verify. But the turkey was not done after all. Everyone was sitting at the table, and we had to put it back in the oven. All the sides were eaten by the time it was actually ready.

Last year my husband insisted we order a turkey ready cooked. Got one from Boston Market. No one liked it. It was tasteless. And the gravy was awful. Unspeakable. Like chicken bouillon with cornstarch added. Hey, making good gravy is one critical skill I got from my Mom. So everyone knows if the gravy is not up to scratch.

My aunt had a restaurant and I used to watch her cook absolutely perfect turkeys, only judging doneness by wiggling a leg up and down (the turkey’s leg, not HER leg). Growing up, SHE had to cook all the extended family Thanksgiving turkeys while the rest of us stood around in awe, taking mental notes.

We also have to assume my son will be late. It’s not his fault, he’s a medical resident and he can’t exactly leave when he wants to. Plus, he and his wife have a new baby, and they will be bringing her to our house for the very first time.

I don’t want to sweat the turkey.

I know lots of you brine, or sous vide, or smoke, and all that: but I just want some better results without needing to buy special equipment or take culinary courses.

I think I should go back to a mass market turkey with a gosh darn pop-up timer. My Mom used to swear by a brand called Jennie-O. I don’t remember seeing those in years. Maybe it was a Wisconsin thing?

Suggestions? Thank you.
