What can I do with this awkward space?
Comments (23)cost of a new counter is about 80/square ft installed. Anything you do will be some new counters. 40-50 square feet in total, but you might be able to get away without replacing the entire countertop depending on where the seams are and the sizes of the pieces you have. Turn the peninsula 90 degrees and place it touching the empty side wall, 41-42 inches away from the countertop against the back wall and long side facing towards the living room. You would have to repair your floor where the downdraft, gas and electric come in through the slab. Looks like there is no downdraft? Maybe gas and electric come through the exterior wall instead of the slab. Remove the big window, close up that part of the wall, Install a venthood, electric, and gas from the exterior and reuse the existing cooktop. you might be able to rescue the counter above the peninsula by installing butcher block or something where the stove cutout was. If you are lucky you might be able to move the counter on the peninsula to the right side of the back wall. Eat your meals in the dining room This will be more than 5K (maybe less than 10k?) You would have a good work zone, a peninsula facing the living room that people can eat at and be served from close to the stove....See MoreAwkward Fireplace, what do I do?
Comments (5)what a great wall space! here's what you need to do. get rid of all of that creamy yellow paint. (paint it a bright white) remove that funky mantle thing and do a solid, wide wood beam fill in the hole in the wall. just call out a dry wall guy and fill it in. before you do, make sure you run all of your electrical behind the wall so you can mount your tv. as for the hole in the brick, you can do wood for decorative purposes, or do a small shelf and put your cable box and stuff in there. lose those mini blinds. do some nicer window trim and maybe some window benches...See MoreWhat to do with awkward space in dinning room?
Comments (6)Nothing. It's the only breathing space in the room between the dog beds, cabinet, mirror, dining table, corner cabinet and window console table. If you feel compelled to fill that space, take the pictures on the hallway wall (that you can't enjoy because there's no light anyway), reframe into coordinating colors and hang in the open space which will then leave the hallway wall as breathing space to the next area of the house. Maybe remove the items, on top of the cabinet below the mirror, to steady the visual space....See MoreWhat can I do with this awkward space?
Comments (13)I can not help but notice there is no overhang there or at your kitchen peninsula. That's got to be uncomfortable sitting there. I do not know how involved you want to get into this, but there's a lot of potential to fix this unfuntional area. Another idea: Turn the 2 door into a 1 door. Build out a closet with a door opening into the other room not viewable in photos. Then possibly use the existing countertop on the other cabinets to put on the backside of the peninsula to finally get some overhang to sit at. You may even be able to use the cabinets on backside of peninsula too, but leave enough room for les 12" min..15-18" better at table level. Here's a rought sketch to hopefully help explain... Again, The floor under cabinets being removed will need work on the transition. Hope that helps give you some ideas :)...See Moreapolich
