what to do with this awkward space?
Comments (13)Wow, thanks for all of these great ideas. Yes, the width of the space is 34 1/2", it looks smaller in the photos I know... Unfortunately the idea of window treatments or frosting won't really work because we have four of these interior windows in the house (they look out from the bedroom/home office onto a long, wide hallway which used to be a front porch) - and whatever you do to one you'd have to do to all four, and I don't want to obstruct them in any way since they are the source of light for the whole house... BUT I think bookshelves are lovely, especially filled with books and other decorative elements, so I wouldn't mind seeing them through the window. Also the window seat idea would be great. It's really too confined of a space to put a reading chair in there, but a built-in window seat would feel cozy I think. I guess I didn't really think about the fact that you can get 10 inch deep bookshelves (or certainly do built-ins that depth) - that seems to make sense though. Thanks!...See MoreWhat to do with awkward living space?
Comments (11)The t v? Huge! Assuming you don’t want it to remain on the floor... You (not I) would build this temporary wall in that wasted space …(you have to figure out how to get the power in there and be able to the walk around each end)…one side for the t v and the other side providing more counter space for the kitchen area. Which is great when you have company…you can use it as a drink bar first, and then as a serving bar. The big window is great, but permanent, so you need no egress. Putting the sofa in front of it removes only the view from the bottom…which isn’t so great, so no loss. Now..ta da…you have a sofa facing t v, and the rest of the space is left for you to fill....See MoreHow do I decorate this awkward space?
Comments (3)I would remove the cabinet and not put another in its place (maybe a tall plant instead); different artwork to coordinate with the dining space; and, agree that a bench would look great in front of the windows and it will be functional, too. A rug under the table (with coordinating runner in front of the bench) and roman blinds in the eating nook would tie the whole space together well......See MoreWhat can I do with this awkward space?
Comments (13)I can not help but notice there is no overhang there or at your kitchen peninsula. That's got to be uncomfortable sitting there. I do not know how involved you want to get into this, but there's a lot of potential to fix this unfuntional area. Another idea: Turn the 2 door into a 1 door. Build out a closet with a door opening into the other room not viewable in photos. Then possibly use the existing countertop on the other cabinets to put on the backside of the peninsula to finally get some overhang to sit at. You may even be able to use the cabinets on backside of peninsula too, but leave enough room for les 12" min..15-18" better at table level. Here's a rought sketch to hopefully help explain... Again, The floor under cabinets being removed will need work on the transition. Hope that helps give you some ideas :)...See MoreJillius
