Fireplaces Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Awkward Fireplace, what do I do?

Our family room has a fireplace, a wood storage area and a TV alcove. It is difficult to see from the picture but the fire place is on the right with the gold frame and the wood storage area is the same size as the fire place on the left. The problem is that our TV is too big for the alcove. We would still like a TV above the fire place and the fireplace is actually gas, so we don't need a wood storage since we are getting gas logs. As you can see the fireplace is not centered in the wall.
How do we make this place functional, but still look nice? Do we wall up the alcove? What about the wood storage area? Wall it up? Paint it? Leave it as is. Help!

isn't that a shame. Well, wall up the top, get a big enough tv that it can span the space, keep the wood box and maybe put some candles or something in that woodbox space?

I'd wall off the alcove and center the TV over the fireplace. Leave the log storage and use it for pretty birch logs even if you don't need them.

Smooth stucco if budget rules. Otherwise, it'd be worth consulting a structural engineer about the options for removing it and replacing it with other supports. Some cities keep copies of original house plans- it may be worth checking with their building permit department to see if there's anything on file that would clarify how the fireplace and support were built originally.

Do you have any pain points? Not enough storage? No place to build a puzzle or do sewing projects? Space for a dog kennel? Reading room? Study for your kids to do homework? Upstairs laundry? Without knowing your needs it is hard to anticipate the best use for this space.

100% you need to consider which way the light directs, and what time of day you use the patio the most. We have a very shallow awning on our house, but deep shade all afternoon because it's east facing, so the house itself blocks the light. You could design a big upper deck that extends past the colonnade -- as big as that concrete pad. The columns will go "through" the upper patio. The upper patio won't be as shaded, but maybe that will be used more like in the morning or something? It might look weird, or it might look fine. Ask the builder if they can design a realistic looking rendering. This could be a pretty expensive project. Also keep in mind that a deep patio cover will darken your living room or whatever is behind those windows. A more practical, affordable solution is to have a big gazebo or pergola built out in the yard. If the "back" or one side faces the setting sun, you can give it a wall or curtains, which will help shade it from noon all the way to sunset.

I still need pictures of the spaces near here and if you did not want the FP then you need to disconnect everything there including that wrong vent hose. Can we see the exterior of the house in that area ? If the cimney is serving more that just the FP we need to know that. Your inspo pic is not going to work unless you don't mind the whole thing sicking out into the room . You need to know what is in the wall above the FP.

what a great wall space! here's what you need to do. get rid of all of that creamy yellow paint. (paint it a bright white) remove that funky mantle thing and do a solid, wide wood beam

fill in the hole in the wall. just call out a dry wall guy and fill it in. before you do, make sure you run all of your electrical behind the wall so you can mount your tv. as for the hole in the brick, you can do wood for decorative purposes, or do a small shelf and put your cable box and stuff in there.

lose those mini blinds.

do some nicer window trim and maybe some window benches

I agree with the others-- drywall over the nook, wall mount the TV in the center. put logs in the storage space. it looks pretty, even if you never use them.

Does your fireplace have fake logs in it? I can't really see any. If not, I'd try to find some realistic looking ones to add to it, then I'd use the wood storage to display some nice looking logs, almost like an art installation. It would add to the ambience of the fireplace, I think.

If the tv is safe over the fireplace, then I'd just have the niche sheetrocked over and center the tv over the whole fireplace area. Or if you want to, if it fits your decor, you could add wood paneling or shiplap to the area above the mantel, covering the niche and hang your tv on that.
