Advice About a New Covered Patio Porch
Comments (7)It greatley depends on what that 22' framing member is used for.A flitch beam is usually built with a steel plate inbetween 2x material those things will span really good and can support a second story. I build 20 ' or so beams made up like your talking about, first we size the lumber thru the table saw, apply counstruction adhesive or a really good polly glue, tack on 1/2'' plywood, clamp them together, fasten them together with ss screws every 16'' on both sides. I use these beams for fancey shade areas stacking layers of 2x6 on top, If I use them for a second floor deck I put a post in mid span. Plywood really wont add a whole lot of span strength it makes the beam very stable. John...See MoreWhat can we do with this awkward space?
Comments (32)I got it! I got it! Inspired by the fabulous view and wanting something restful in the DR, put in a waterfall wall!!! It would be gorgeous. You can get them in glass, acrylic, copper, steel, colors, all kinds of things. And you can set them up to be just the upper part of the wall with a buffet or credenza in front. You can get them to be rain, bubbles or water fall.... And how cool is that, fire and water.... Comments (2)Hi there! Congrats on your first house. The patio is a really nice area and you can make it into great usable space. I agree with Jan on painting the downspout the same color as the house, But then at the bottom, you could change out the spout going across the yard and connect an underground "pipe". They're usually black plastic pieces that have a name I'm sure, but I don't know what! We have them on one side of our home which work perfectly. It would, obviously, call for digging up a small line in the yard, but you can just throw some grass seed down when you are done and it will be back in no time. I was thinking about some kind of trellis as well which would help with privacy. Do you have room in a garage or basement to store a small patio set for the winter. I grew up in upstate NY, so I know your weather well!! Many patio sets have chairs that are stackable or fold up, which may be easier. Or you could just get a few comfy chairs (weather resistant)with a small matching table. Then you could bring the cushions in and if you weren't opposed, you could cover the pieces and leave them there for the winter, if you don't have storage space. Here's one idea: Here is a link that might be useful: patio set...See MoreAwkward Fireplace, what do I do?
Comments (5)what a great wall space! here's what you need to do. get rid of all of that creamy yellow paint. (paint it a bright white) remove that funky mantle thing and do a solid, wide wood beam fill in the hole in the wall. just call out a dry wall guy and fill it in. before you do, make sure you run all of your electrical behind the wall so you can mount your tv. as for the hole in the brick, you can do wood for decorative purposes, or do a small shelf and put your cable box and stuff in there. lose those mini blinds. do some nicer window trim and maybe some window benches...See MoreKate
