Exterior makeover (again!)
Comments (17)keep the ideas coming. geokid--since the mudroom is to corral 4 people's shoes and coats in very cold and snowy New England--keeping them in the garage is not an option for me, too cold, dirty and dusty. The picture is lovely, but realistically, it would be that clean only once. :) When we redid the kitchen/FR, I added a "built in" wardrobe/coat cabinet just inside the garage entry into the house that matches the kitchen and built-in around the FR fireplace as my answer to lack of mudroom/coat closet space. Shoes still end up in a pile inside the door, though the coats do often make into the cabinet. It's a solution that never really worked. snookums--the second has a gable roof over the porch to break up the rooflines. would love to hear your thoughts on window placement! The siding I am leaning towards is a vinyl shingle in a medium to dark grey with white trim. I want as low maintenance as possible--roof would be prob a dark grey. The current siding is cheap white vinyl over what we think its T1-11 from some work we had done. I'm tired of the clapboard look, but still, nothing definite. More eyes really help me. But all this may be a seriously moot point as they are proposing a casino in the next town--about 4 miles from my house, and they just had a really heavy hitter sign on to partner it. I can only imagine the property values plummeting if it goes through. thanks...See MoreOur Colonial Makeover
Comments (3)This modern eclectic style is known as Neo-Classical Revival rather than Colonial or Colonial Revival. It was popular in the late 70's and 80's especially with southern developers. It borrows from many other styles but is primarily derived from the Neo-Classical style popular after the First World War....See MoreExterior makeover on tired colonial
Comments (7)why don't you consider doing the porch like this? and if you can swing the metal roof overhang at more of an angle, even better! this shake is done in a sage green. weathered cedar shake is great if you're at the beach. otherwise, I like the original color Black and dark charcoal look amazing w/cedar. if you ever have to replace the windows (or, if they're wood and you can paint them) go w/a black or dark bronze. Ditto for the trim on the home black or charcoal roof, black trim/ windows, and a proper front door. amazing. And if you want to stain them that dark charcoal? This looks great too. but notice how they kept the fascia roof trim in the same dark gray. I like that. white everywhere else you need a more traditional style door, and not the oval victorian some other colonial style porch pics. you don't have dormers, but maybe one over the porch wouldn't be bad? that flat roof does nothing if you could build the porch all the way over to the left, under that window, you could have something similar to this look (no shutters)...See MoreExterior Makeover Suggestions for brick/vinyl siding colonial home?
Comments (13)So the garage doors draw the eye because they are light and your front door is black. IMHO, trying to add brick veneer and get both sides matching will be difficult and expensive, and may not ultimately look good. If the bricks don’t match and you limewash, your contractor will really need to be an expert to get both sides identical. You will also have to paint or replace the garage doors because the light color makes the house look off balance. I would paint the brick the same color as the siding. Siding holds paint well, so you can actually paint your house a whole new color if you want. You can paint your shutters too, and your front door. If you could pick any color in the world for your house, what would it be?...See MoreCelery. Visualization, Rendering images
