The original master bathroom in this Colorado home looked like a time capsule from the 1990s. Its faux-gold-trimmed shower, oversize whirlpool tub in the corner and boring beige tile just screamed for an update. The homeowners enlisted designer Deidre Oliver to transform the large space into a cozy and contemporary spa-like retreat.

AFTER: A soaking tub replaced the corner tub and became the centerpiece of the room. The homeowners spent a day test-driving tubs by sitting in various models until they found a winner — a 70-inch slipper tub from Barclay.
Oliver then positioned a glass-walled shower for two behind the tub. It features a quartz bench and dual rain shower heads. The shower is also curbless, allowing for wheelchair access for the homeowners or future homeowners if needed.
Once these two main features of the design plan were in place, Oliver looked to architect Mark Queripel to help with demolition, plumbing and reworking the exterior wall, which included adding clerestory windows to the porcelain-tiled shower wall to maximize light.
Tile: Yakarta (shower) and Parker (floor), both Porcelanosa; free-standing tub filler with spray head, towel hooks and shower trim: Cifial

BEFORE: The counter’s L shape was inefficient, while Hollywood lights and carpeting combined for a ho-hum look.
AFTER: A streamlined double vanity creates more efficient storage in less space. Underfloor heating warms porcelain tiles in a wood look to keep feet cozy during the chilly Colorado winters.

For linen storage, Oliver designed a large custom cabinet in red oak, which she selected to “add warmth in the room and to balance the clean lines of the tile wall and sleek quartz.”
Adorned with modern elements and cheery hits of pink, this bathroom is a happy, elegant space devoid of any traces of decades past.
