Leaf death-- I can't figure out what's wrong
Comments (4)The first two pictures are a plant in the ground, the last ones are a plant in a 5-gallon spackle bucket. The plants were started from seed in . . . I guess. . . April (?) Planted out around the second week in May. They are all heirloom and indeterminate. The container has 1/3 well-cooked sheep manure/ straw compost, 1/3 peat, 1/3 vermiculite. I dumped hydroponic solution in the container once, several weeks ago. I did not notice any particular change at that time, and it was added only to the bucket and not to the plant in the ground. The bucket gets watered whenever I notice the leaves wilting. The plant that's in the ground has been watered maybe once (I don't have a hose hookup) It has been VERY hot and humid and pretty dry lately. I was surprised that the plants set fruit in the heat. I recently added woodchip mulch around the plants in the ground. I can haul buckets of water out to the garden if moisture might be the problem. The weird thing is that most of the plants in the ground look healthy and green, and that one plant is half dead. The plant in the ground is much worse off than the plant in the pot, and I didn't see it wilt before it turned brown and died. I was worried that it might be something terrible like viral wilt. I would be so relieved if it can be solved by watering more. Thanks so much for the help, Dave...See MoreI can't figure out how to use Gag combi steam oven.
Comments (17)Oh yes, I absolutely love my Gagg steam oven! After enjoying it for almost two years, I know I'd replace it in a heartbeat if I had to, despite the outrageous price. I've learned to steam many of the things I used to boil---potatoes or shrimps, for example. It's much faster than waiting for a pot of water to boil, and if you're in a severe drought situation, as we were last summer, it saves water. For steaming small quantities, I use an inexpensive Chinese bamboo steamer, placing it on the wire rack; a 10"-diameter one works fine, and you can stack two if necessary. Usually, they come in three-piece sets (two round baskets plus a cover), but since you don't need the cover in the steam oven, try to find a place that sells them singly (sorry, I can't remember where I got mine). But stick with the steam oven, and don't be afraid to experiment a bit after you feel more comfortable with the knobs and buttons. I think you'll come to love it as much as most owners do. ---Margaret...See MoreHelp! I can't figure out how to post a photo!
Comments (13)I did follow your instructions and used photo bucket and did manage to post some photos last night. I couldn't figure out how to get a link to my entire album on photo bucket, though. I did see how to get the links for each individual photo. Buel- the instructions I was having trouble with were the ones at the bottom of the forum page: "instructions how to use this forum" and its associated linked help pages. I realize that the link you posted for me above, to your "new to this forum" message post, does have good instructions on how to post photos. Sorry, I had read that post a few weeks ago, and didn't remember there was anything about posting photos in it. Your instructions are clear. Thanks again....See MoreCan't figure out how to fix rattling pipes
Comments (2)First of all, we can rule out water hammer because water hammer only occurs as a result of the rapid rise from dynamic head pressure (working pressure under flow) to the static head pressure (pressure when there is no flow). The type of noise your describing is a constant chattering noise that occurs during the flow. It generally is a result of a rapid fluctuation in pressure caused by a loose valve seat that is rapidly fluctuating, such as a loose faucett washer, defective solenoid valve or a weakened spring in a pressure regulating valve. This type of noise is generally most pronounced in the near proximity of the source, which in your case is at the Pressure Reducing Valve. Pressure reducing valves are factory preset to allow the code maximum of 80psi, however a PRV regulates the pressure by means of a spring activated diaphram and in the course of time the springs can and do weaken. The proper fix is to replace a defective PRV, however you may be able effect a temporary repair by slightly increasing the tension of the spring. On the top of the PRV you will see what looks like a bolt protruding out of the top of a round dome. You may try turning that bolt ONE TURN clockwise, and that should relieve the problem, but absolutely DO NOT turn that bolt more than one turn. Doing so could cause the PRV to allow pressures in excess of your plumbing design range and could cause damage to both pipes and fixtures throughout the house. If turning that bolt one turn does not resolve the problem then you will need to replace the PRV....See MoreLaura Mac
