What can I use to replace the sherry?

I'm looking forward to making a lovely sounding recipe from Milk Street magazine--a white bean and mushroom gratin that calls for 1/3 c. sherry. I have nothing against alcohol, but I really don't want to buy a bottle of sherry (assuming I could even find a decent one in my very rural area) just to make a recipe that I might not make again for a long time. (I'm a 1 person household, so this would be for guests.) Should I use chicken broth? Balsamic vinegar? Rice vinegar? Or just water.
