someone i know is renovating their entire front yard which was basically all lava rock. they asked me if i wanted to keep it so i did a bit of research on here to see what were some uses for lava rock outside of the decorative landscape purposes. from what i've gathered, it seems lava rock and perlite have similar properties except that lava rock will hold slightly less water.

i know perlite is used for a lot of things including container mixes, seed starting mixes, propagation. does this mean that lava rock can be used for all of those things as well? i've seen people rooting roses or plants in perlite but i cant imagine someone doing it in lava rock.

the lava rock that my friend is giving away is the normal landscape sized ones but i have no problem pounding it into a normal size similar to perlite

perlite here is sort of expensive so if i could use free lava rock instead that would be pretty awesome

thank you
