Potato salad failed again
Comments (44)FWIW, the original post is 13 years old. 2008. But the watery issue seems to be a problem for some. I agree it might be the miracle whip breaking down. I packed up some lunches this morning and the potato salad i made Saturday was like glue. Very creamy loaded with vegetables---celery, green onion, red pepper, etc. I used both russet, cut into quarters, and small waxy white creamers, cut in half, before boiling. Cut probably releases alot more steam when cooling. I cut further when cool enough to handle. The russets crumble a bit making a starchy 'gravy'. Probably helps that i use mustard and horseradish powder in my dressing. As well as Korean chili flake. Cucumber will definitely release water overnight. I like to add cucumber but to the table and not fully incorporated. You could probably save a watery salad by draining the puddle and adding dry mustard powder. It will not only add flavor but it is a water absorber. Also, make sure your potatoes are fully cooked. When pierced easily with a fork, give them just a few more minutes. Slightly undercooked potatoes are bland. They will not absorb the dressing as well as slightly overcooked....See MoreFailed at dipping shortbread in chocolate. again .what gives?
Comments (14)I dip a lot of Buckeyes every so often. This time, I put a heating pad in a large stainless steel bowl, put a towel over it (so it wouldn't get messy), then set my glass bowl of microwave-melted chocolate chips on top of the pad. The chocolate stayed a nice melty consistency - didn't start to "drag." (I actually can't take credit for this, though; I saw it on TV - America's Test Kitchen, maybe?) I never add extra fat to the chips and I also nuke them first. I used to put the Buckeyes in the fridge to set the chocolate, but have found that they're better if they "cure" at room temp....See MoreOnce again, money fails to provide a good kitchen...
Comments (29)Ok, I LOVE that house, HATE that kitchen! The wallpaper totally fits, and that house would sell where I live, EXCEPT for the kitchen! Also, the carpet on the staircase is putrid. The same type of house where I live (Long Island, NY) would have an awesome, huge, top-of-the-line, well-designed kitchen. It would also have more land. The taxes would be $15,000-$20,000 though. My taxes are $12,000 (that was on a 1,800 sq.ft. 3 bedroom Cape; we added on and fear what they will be now)! I've been in some of the local Victorians and they ALL have huge new kitchens - that kitchen is the crappiest, ugliest thing I've ever seen. It makes my tiny galley look impressive. At least mine is original to the house. Seriously, that kitchen would drop the value of that house by at least $100,000 - mostly because it is so small for that kind of house. Also, all the old houses I visited on the local house tour a few years ago were totally restored to the proper period, but they ALL had HUGE kitchen or kitchen / great room additions. Seriously, some of the kitchens were bigger than my entire second floor. I LOVE the barn-conversion house in Indianapolis, though! It even has the original Mid-Century Modern kitchen! But that could use some retro sprucing up, though....See MoreMSNBC's weekly news quiz (I failed . . . again)
Comments (13)I stopped reading at the first question. I don't see how what brand of beer a guy likes is "news". It is just trivia. I read the news....See MoreJay 6a Chicago
