What's the coldest weather your seed pod has successfully grown in?

It's been consistently in the mid 50's every night here. It raises to the low 70s in the day.

It's around 3 weeks old. I really want this pod to make it!

Do any of you have stories to share on growing pods when it's cooler?

Hi Candice, we regularly have seedpods on our Adeniums during our Winter here in Australia. Our Winter nighttime temps are regularly 10c (approx 50 Fahrenheit) dropping as low as 4c some nights without any ill effects to the seedpods. So our temps during winter are usually between 10c -20c most days. (Our plants are left outside in the yard all winter long).

The key is to keep seedpods dry during these times....so you may have to move them out of the rain. (Just to be clear, we still water our plants/soil in small amounts about once a month during Winter, just enough to keep them going, but......we don’t wet the seedpod). The seedpods grow much slower during winter and tend to wait till spring to ripen when the days are warmer.

As long as you keep your seedpod dry through Winter it should be fine :)

Mike, Unfortunately I have to start over with my ice cream banana because i left it out in the cold. I'm currently moving and might try with a metal halide indoors. While we're on the subject of tropicals though I have a miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) in Al's 5-1-1 by a window with a cfl which is currently flushing yet again. It initally dropped all its leaves back in march but its come all the way back. Hopefully I'll get some fruit from it soon. I also have a second one of these trees- I put it in the 5-1-1 but with Sphagnum instead of peat. It dropped all its leaves and has done nothing at all for the past 3 months. The moss is very slow to dry but I hear these love water so I don't know whats wrong with this one. Maybe it needs humidity indoors to get it kick started. If anyone would know, i'd love to hear. I'm anxious to try growing some citrus this summer. -Greg

Has anyone grown lantana from seed?

I've just collected some Lantana seeds and was looking for info on how to germinate them. I found the following in a scientific paper from Australia. It seems to confirm the experiences of members of this and other GW forums, that germination tends to be low, but can be improved by removing the pulp from the berries and providing sufficient light and heat (as would be likely in Texas as opposed to Massachusetts or Michigan): "Lantana seeds need high light conditions for germination and early growth (Gentle and Duggin 1997b; Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003), and seedlings are unlikely to survive beneath parent bushes. The germination rate of lantana is low under both laboratory and field conditions, with estimates of 4Â20% (Graaff 1987) and 44.5% (Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003). Germination rates increased from ten per cent to 46 per cent when the fleshy pulp was manually removed from the seed. This higher germination rate is comparable to that obtained from seeds collected from the faeces of wild birds. Seeds germinate at any time of the year given sufficient soil moisture, with most seed germinating after the first summer storms in northern Australia (Parsons and Cuthbertson 2001, in Day et al. 2003). A wet garden and Mimulus cardinalis--Has anyone grown this?

Wow. Long time no see on that thread. Thanks for dredging it up. The Mimulus cardinalis is a sad story. I planted three of them in the fall of '05, and they just never took. I could tell they weren't settling in, and then the cold weather came and I had a bad feeling about them. Spring of '06 came and they did not survive. I called Joy Creek, and told them the sad story. I said it might have been too late in the year to successfully plant them. They very kindly agreed to send 3 replacement plants, and I put them in immediately. They settled in nicely, putting out new growth and I was feeling very hopeful about them. That summer, misfortune struck. We had workmen redo our front sidewalk. There were 4 or 5 guys, very nice fellows, but pretty clueless about plants. I pointed to the Mimulus and made sure to tell at least one of the workmen to please be very careful not to trample them. I'm sure you can tell where this sad story is leading. I went inside for a bit, and when I came out, all three plants were ground down to mush. They never recovered and this time I knew there wouldn't be any free replacements. Maybe I'll try to order some more this spring and try again. They really had been settling in quite nicely, and I could have just died when they got stomped. I should have told all of the workmen, not just one guy. What a disappointment. I wish you luck with them, flutterbug, and thanks for resurrecting this old thread. I'll let you know if I decide to try again.

Has anyone grown Grady Bailly Greasy Cutshort beans?

Thanks, George. Just sent a reply to your e-mail. Sorry about the delay. I think I should rephrase my question. I hope to be able to grow George's wonderful sounding Tennessee Cutshort beans next year. They sound like everything I am looking for in a pole bean: meaty, tender and widely adaptable. That being said, if you had only limited growing space and can have only two pole beans, would a greasy bean like Grady Bailly be sufficiently different in taste and texture from Tennessee Cutshort to justify growing them? Or should I go for something completely different like a pole shelly? I have grown Blue Lake bush beans for several years, but I tend not to like wimpy, slender snaps. Otherwise I would choose something like Fortex as my second pole bean. But I would rather grow something more interesting and maybe work toward preserving a heritage variety.

UPDATE:

My pod made it through winter and just opened! So that took from October to early January. I kept them inside next to a patio window (not a lot of light gets in). The two pods opened within 4 or so days of eachother.

I noticed that the plant with the pod was the only one of my plants that suffered stem rot. I don't know if that has to do with the fact that it was carrying a pod or not. I thought maybe it exerted all of its energy into the seeds and maybe started dying off on the other branches because of it. What do you all think? I had to chop most of it (its a graft called "peach"). One branch had spread to the beginning of the graft. So hopefully it won't spread further.

Anyhoo, this was my first successful cross pollination by hand, so I'm super excited! It was between an unknown purple graft and a pink yellow "peach" graft. I really hope it creates something neat!

This is from one pod. I got over 40 seeds out of the two. Most were good. Some weren't fully developed.
