I'm clueless. Kitchen recessed lighting placement?
Comments (2)My kitchen is smaller than yours (151" x 114", with about 66" of floor space between cabinets on opposite walls). I have three 5" cans along the long counter, each about 4 ft apart (center to center) with the center one approx. midway. Two more cans are along the opposite wall (which is not as long and has the frig and pantry) -- these cans are about 3.75 ft from the first row. The area is very well lit with these 5 cans -- no dark areas or overlap. You do want to center the cans over the counter edges of work zones-- that will illuminate the work area without casting a shadow. If the cans are behind someone working at the counter --> shadow. Also, try to place any can that is in front of a pantry so that the can will illuminate the inside of the pantry, not be blocked by the open pantry (or frig) door. A larger space might look better with 6" cans, but that really is a matter of personal preference. The difference between 5" and 6" is minor to my eye. f you go with 4" you will have to have more of them....See MoreHelp! Kitchen Lighting Placement/Plan/Recessed Lighting Advice
Comments (3)@Kimberly J, You're on the right track. While you've not given us a ceiling height nor details on materials/finishes (all affect lighting design) please consider the following: • Depending on actual pendant choices, your island could handle 3 smaller pendants & your peninsula could handle 1-2 pendants. These might all be complimentary to the pendant style you choose to hang over the table. • Lighting for sink wall & art wall could all be controlled together via dimmer. • Lights for island & for peninsula should be controlled separately, dimmers. Maybe locate the island's pendants dimmer on the island itself. • Before choosing actual recessed light size & final layout, think about the quantity & quality of the light it produces. The Lithonia Wafer LED comes 3", 4" or 6", and the Philips SlimSurface LED comes from 4" to 7". Each is available round or square, and in a few different color temperatures. I suggest using LEDs that are 2700k (a warmer white light like incandescent bulbs). I suggest the attached image for a possible layout. Less recessed lighting than the original. Please post pics when the project is completed....See MorePlacement of recessed lights in kitchen?
Comments (5)My lighting store recommended (and I followed their advice & now agree) positioning them over the edge of the counter. Farther out will cast a shadow between you and the items you are working on, farther in limits the amount of light that reaches into the aisles or lower cabinets. Also, find out the diameter of the light cast by your chosen lights and plan the spacing accordingly (different sizes and brands will vary in this -- you can get the info on the manufacturer's website). The store also said to place the lights so that an open door (fridge or cabinet) won't cast a shadow into the interior of the cabinet/fridge....See MoreKitchen recessed lighting & island pendant lighting placement ideas
Comments (1)I don't have pendents or recessed lighting - so no help there, but if you don't have under cabinet lighting, add that to your list. My under cabinet lighting is the most helpful lighting I have. At a guess, I would say 2 pendants over the island, but your lighting store should also be able to help you. It depends on what you use and if your recessed lights light up the island - then pendants aren't necessary. Change out the track light over the sink for sure....See Moreopaone
