Why are so many people afraid of using lots of manure?
Comments (33)Hi Phebe Greenhouse, Yeah, talk about mad... I spent forever trying to figure out what could be wrong in my garden! I'm probably overly paranoid now about manure, but short of getting a small amount and mixing with soil, then doing a test plant of bean and tomato seeds, there's not a good way to evaluate it. (Lab tests apparently exist, but they are very expensive.) Also, my experience with this was somewhat spotty in terms of which parts of beds were affected. English peas grew fairly well while the tomato next to them was twisted. I let a few of these plants grow to maturity and you could see the effects of the herbicide - an eggplant that had huge, beautiful healthy leaves near the ground and curled and twisted puny leaves at top. I started all my own plants, so I'm sure that the plants weren't contaminated from another source. The dairy farm was non-responsive when I reported the problem. I suspect they continue to sell the contaminated top soil to unsuspecting gardeners. :-( You're right about the diagnosis problem. If I hadn't talked to the county agent, I'd have never thought of herbicide. I was sure I had some virus as it was the second year of a fairly organic garden and I had quite a few leaf hoppers and other critters that could be spreading it... I hear you on the sad to buy it in bags... For gardeners just starting out in rural GA - there aren't a lot of resources for "organic" materials. Even the hay has been sprayed......See More36' dual range with indoor grill- best brand?
Comments (2)Don't forget that you'll have to significantly upgrade your ventilation to deal with a grill. That's an expense and design consideration that many people don't realize until too late in the process. Firepower and proper ventilation go hand in glove when considering range placement, BTU's, and other features like a grill. Grills can be useful, but you need a LOT more ventilation for them than you will just plain high BTU burners. In some climates, you'll also need makeup air to go along with that ventilation. So, you need to understand all of the elements that go along with your wish list....See MoreIndoor Electric Grill
Comments (1)Tricia, I've purchased a number of indoor grills over the years, and they all had the same fault: wouldn't get hot enough to sear and carmelize the meats and vegetables. Early this year I finally found one that I really like, made under the Wolfgang Puck label. The grilling surface is reversible, to a griddle on the other side. Adjustable temperatures. Dishwasher safe (except for the temperature dial and cord, of course). Excellent grill marks, but the heat can be regulated for eggs and pancakes on the griddle side. It is not at all flimsy, and has a decent size cooking surface of 11"x17". I am very pleased with this grill/griddle, and use it quite a bit....See MoreDo you Grill on your Range Top?
Comments (12)I thought I would add my .02 :) We don't have a built-in grill but we do grill all the time using a Lodge Logic grill pan. We love it and find that with the high heat we can get on our center gas burner we can get an "outdoor" grill flavor that is better even than charcoal w/o the after taste that some grill cooking has. We have a 1400 cfm remote blower. It is a liner from Tradewind. It is quiet and efficient and gets every bit of grease and odor. I will post a couple pics .Can't stress enough the initial start of the fan about 5 min before cooking starts. Also let run as long as there is a hot pan on the burner and to get all of the "dirty" air out of the system before you shut it off. This is why you want a system that is quiet so you will use it completely. I also want to mention having more power than you "need" so that you can use medium as your max speed. The reason for this is that turbulence is created inside the duct on high and the odors/steam/grease etc come 'back at'cha". This is a law of physics and is unavoidable so plan on this when getting the cfm you need. A few more things: get baffles as they are easy to clean, they are quieter, they capture better. If you have a high cfm you can ignore the 6" extra that you need in width and also add height to your hood to place it further away from the cooktop. We have a 54" and there is no extra on the ends. We also have it 33" above cook surface. As you can see it works great and I am REALLY glad we have it higher. One reason I like the grill pan is the above mentioned cleanup. It is simplicity with the LL pan. Wiping down the cook top is a breeze and no parts to remove etc. Way more than you probably wanted to know LOL> Here are a couple pics and there are tons more on my photobucket accts . c steaks on LL pan: view of high heat wok cooking and what happens when you have good ventilation: view of hood assembly:...See Morecrcollins1_gw
